New and need help

Hi first and foremost I am not new to ww1/ww2 collecting but am new to k98ks. I am an airplane mechanic so have some disposable income and have been wanting a k98k for years as Mausers are my fav thing to collect. I am wanting a legit authentic matching numbers early s/42 or 42 code real one as my first buy. There is several on gunbroker matching 42 code k98s but am weary of fakes specially at those prices. Can anyone help me in identifying them as real or fake?

welcome to the forum. Above is a link to our picture thread. Scroll down to find known good examples of the models you are looking for. Compare the details.
I looked at the 3 auction listings currently for S/42 on GB. The highest price offering by Mauser WZ.29 is the only matching correct rifle of the 3. Others may see things I have not.
His lower priced offering is not matched as the description states. The metal on that one also looks like it may have been refinished.
The first rifle by dannyseller123450 is mismatched as his description and picture show. The stock is off a different rifle.

Thank you! I know nothing of how easily these can be faked. Ik of the mass stamps found and home made ones but not how to tell if they are original on the gun or aged to look the part.

Post photos of rifles you find in the proper section here on the forum and multiple members will chime in. Post photos, not links of active auctions since it's against the rules to do so.

it takes years of looking at photos & rifles in hand to learn the differences, and a mind adept at filing & retreiving minutia. But as Zep suggests post clear photos here & those who already have the knowledge can help you find your holy grail.

It should be the one pertaining to the era of the rifle, in your example 1935-45, the nazi era. an earlier rifle, earlier period ‘thread’/subforum, a postwar rifle……..postwar forum.
That way you’ll attract feedback from the most knowledgeable people in whatever subgrouping the particular example falls into.
There are some remarkable folks here who seem to know almost everything!
