Need info on this 98k

Hey there
I have been over on canadian gun nutz trying to find some info on this rifle but this seemed like the perfect place to ask. I have a friend with a mint 1934 sauer kar 98k with what he has described as mismatched serial numbers, I have not yet actually seen the rifles so i am going off waht he has told me and two pictures. He wants to sell the rifle and i told him i will try to find the going price. I am trying to get him to send me more pics and i will be over to see them soon, so i will update as i get more info. So if any of you could lend a hand i would greatly appreciate that

Based on these few very poor photos, I have to guess that it is a restoration of some kind. That stock looks like its a Norwegian one. Someone probably tried to save a rifle that was sportered. That stock color and finish looks like Norwegian to me.

Could be totally wrong but that is my gut feeling.

Thanks, i will look into that. the story behind the gun is that in the early 1950's a german sharp shooter who came to work for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police brought over a crate of these and was selling them. My buddies grandfather bought one for 50$ and only ever shot it twice. It has been in a closet ever since. If it is a Norwegian stock will there be any specific markings that will stand out?

A dash and some numbers followed by another dash on the buttplate.

Once again, just a theory based on the photos.

nothing more than a mix-master s/147/g that is cool in its own right.
keep it, shoot it , enjoy it ect....

Oh yea i am not trying to sell the rifle per say, my buddies grandfather just passed and he doesnt want it. I am trying to find him a fair price so i can take it off his hands.

Tuff to say.. I don't know the market in Canada. IN the usa maybe 500.00 or there abouts ?

Just trade a few beaver pelts and some fat back. Eh.. Oh, and some Rush 8-tracks.

The market here in Canada is bad if you are looking for good rifles, pretty scarce and hard to find. I wonder if the bolt matches the action? If so it would be worth putting in a proper stock(Sauer built walnut, flat butt). It might be an East German refurb as well, hard to say. Russian capture rifles go for $450 to maybe $600 tops for an unpeened one with nice wood. I think that one would be worth a little more to me IF the bolt matches the action( I might throw in a couple Rush eight tracks). If not I would think it would sell for the same as an RC. Any post war markings hurt value badly. Too bad it's not original, early rifles are hard to find.

I know this is kind of off topic but cant you get svt 40s for like $250 in canada? Yes your mauser looks like a standard russian capture I would offer him $450.

I have a spare WaA37 laminated (unsanded!) stock with flat buttplate somewhere around, but no idea upon how to get it to Canada .. Just wanted to add that the rifle is reblued, note the already partially scrubbed markings on the receiver. And the safety looks really long, but that could also be due to the perspective.

Yes, SVT 40s can be had around the $250-300 mark. The SKS is also very plentiful here - going rate seems to be $200 for a Russian example - the Chinese ones can be even cheaper.

In terms of the rifle pictured above - I'd say $500 would be pretty fair in the Canadian market. That seems to be about the going rate of Russian Captured and East German refurbished rifles so I feel this example would fall in the same price bracket.

It's tough to say without better photos but it very well could be an East German refurb - it has that high polish look to it....
