My first k98

Hi all,
This is my first K98 and my first post.
I know it’s a mix master and not historically correct. I bought it as a shooter because it has an excellent bore.
All comments are welcome, good or bad.
I’m not thin skinned.

John

“looks good from Chicago” ! is the butt plate blued, or just the angle? I’m sure you tried hard to keep the images small, but they can be a few hundred kb each, would give a bit better detail.

Yea, the butt plate is blued. The number on the back of the butt plate matches the stock, but the stock doesn’t match the gun.
I’m sorry about the pictures. I had some issues getting them small enough.

Hopefully these pics are a little clearer.

is there a lower case letter on the barrel below the sn? in ‘44 dot used the entire alphabet, then to double letters (blocks of 9,999 rifles) but yours is 5 digits (99,999/block). butt plate was blued & numbered by post-war users. ( you mentioned that butt plate sn & stock sn match, did you show the stock sn?)
from 10ft, it looks about right for a dot 44, except for the butt plate. I have mixed feelings about those, I know blued is ‘wrong’, but a regulation polished bp just looks silly on a dark brown rifle, IMO. I have one in my parts box, looking for a way to lighten it chemically without making it bright silver.

“Looks great from Chicago” was something said by a fellow I learned a lot about painting from.

Looking at the recoil lug in pic #1, this might be a Gustloff stock. Wonder if the take down disk is marked?

Hi,
There’s no letter below the serial number, just 82927.
The number on the stock and butt plate is 1733.
I can take a picture of both if you’d like to see them.

Here’s more pics of the disk, stock and butt plate numbers and the serial on the barrel.

Thanks for all the information.
I paid $850 for it.
Do you think I overpaid or did ok?
Either way, I really like it and it’s not going anywhere. I can’t wait to shoot it. Unfortunately the snow in Ohio put a damper on my plans.

John, Hey if your happy with it, don't matter what anyone else thinks, Shoot it and enjoy it! My Dad and I have bought many surplus mausers from individuals and repaired as needed, never mining serial #'s ect.... we make em to shoot. Most went the sporterized way, Have several Vunderbar examples, a few remain intact Millitary style. We collect Mausers but not too picky on #'s and matching. He has been a custom gunsmith since 56' Year I was born. We make em to shoot and enjoy everyone of them. Took 3 Elk with the one he gave me on my 21st birthday. New bbl on it , chambered for 30-06, another nice one we have is 300 mag. sweet shooters and fine Mausers. Take care and enjoy your Rifle.

Thanks. I picked it because it appears the barrel and bolt match. It also has a nice bore and I wanted one I could shoot a lot.
My brother and I have the Enfield’s and Mosin’s and like to have shoot offs at steel plates. Figured this one could join the rotation.
