My first Gew98 for the WW1 collection, 1916 WMO bolt mismatch

Hello, just wanted to share a recent addition to the WW1 collection, been wanting one of these for awhile. This will probably be my only example for now as it's not a primary focus of my collection, if I'm only going to have one it might as well be pretty. All matching except the cleaning rod and the bolt, bayonet lug appears to be a factory error numbered 75. This rifle came out of an estate near Fort Wayne, IN and I was told by a friend of mine helping with the collection that the previous owner probably scrubbed a few numbers on the bolt, I guess he thought it was better to be blank than mismatched . The bore is excellent, sharp rifling and bright/shiny. No import marks of course. This rifle was in the store with a price tag, it was eventually to be listed on gunbroker. Of course I had to go back the next day and grab it, the stock is beautiful and I figured it would go for way more on GB. They even came down a little bit on price and I ended up with a good deal, especially in today's crazy world of milsurp pricing. Thanks for looking and please let me know what ya think, she looks good next to the No1Mk3* I picked up from Jordan last year...(it's your fault for getting me thinking about Gew98's haha)

Mongoose--
That's a beauty of a WMO. Great metal and wood..Thanks for sharing. Everything looks textbook to me with it.

Don't let the m/m bug you. A lot of these came back with m/m bolts and the rods were another common m/m part. I'm glad you got this one and took the time to document it right.

What a wonderful rifle love that stock beautiful stripes. These pictures really do show this rifle off really well. Thank you for taking the time to do it.

And no need to thank me it's nice to bring other people involved in the hobby! I'll be honest you say this rifle is your first Gew98, but I'm sure it won't be your last Gew98 either lol. To be honest I thought I would be done after 1 rifle. Now, I have an entire safe full of them plus other Imperial weapons.

The next course action is we need to get your rifle a nice sling and muzzle lid. Maybe a good looking butcher or sawback bayonet as well.

And like I told you when you messaged me. I noticed no Imperial proof on the stock disc. There might be a chance it's unit marked under there, but you have to be careful removing it to look.

Glad to see you joined the Gewehr club! I’ve seen all you been posting it as a wanted traded on ingo and several other forums.

Definitely a fine example for a first Gewehr. Much better than my first example lol.

Agreed, damn fine first Gew, many have to search a long time for one so nice. Thanks for the detailed photos, very helpful for the reference. Like Jordan says, a muzzle cap is a good accessory, and you can find Mauser Oberndorf made 98/05 bayonets, one of which would pair nicely with this.

I agree with all here, an excellent choice for a type collection, attractive and original! Selling, should the need arise, should be no difficulty!

Thanks guys, definitely not bothered by the bolt mismatch, just happy to have a nice German WW1 rifle! It did come with a muzzle cover, I'll upload a couple pics of it. Definitely need a correct sling and bayonet, a must for every rifle in my collection! Jordan I would certainly pick up another(several?) more gew98's if circumstances/budget allowed for it, I just know that probably won't happen for a few years at least ......just working on a basic WW1 "side collection" for now, we'll see what it blooms into. Will definitely look into removing the disk but only if I can do it without causing harm. Thanks again for the comments, now I need a nice French rifle...it never ends haha
