Try some fine bronze wool. a little gun oil, elbow grease, a few soft, clean cloths and time mixed in with patience. You might be surprised.
You won`t bring the blue back but some of this old stuff looks pretty good in thin blue and patina.

I’d do what you said you want to do in your post. I’m a big admirer of Mark Novak he does some amazing work. Eventually im going to rust blue my Russian capture the same way.
You’re not removing the old blueing just converting the rust as im sure you’re well aware.
I’m excited to see how it comes out

You're still fundamentally altering the finish of the firearm. Removing old bluing or not, you're refinishing it.

A lot of Novak's "restoration" work falls way further on the "refurbish/refinish" side of the line than I am comfortable with.

I'm typically not someone to tell anyone what they should do with their personnel property, as that's a two way street. Just keep in mind that part of what makes it special holding and shooting these rifles is the history in your hands. My grandfathers bring back P38 is a little rough from sitting in a holster for 40 years, but it would never feel the same in my hands if I changed that.

Whelp I’ve had a few bourbons and I’m foolish enough to be reading the internet. Don’t drink and forums, kids.

Anyways don’t refinish historical firearms or you’re a fucking hack. I want to disseminate with some polite language about your property your decision but (I have a small penis) it.

You want to refinish your gun? YeH, your decision. I cNt stop if. But I don’t have to condone it. I mean I guess if makes my guns a tiny bit more valuable be cause you ruined yours but I take no joy in that.

This isn’t 1960 any more. We aren’t a bunch of broke a$$ vets trying to turn a trophy into a deer getter.

Refinishing sucks, full stop, and I don’t give a shite I’f mark Novak shits shiny turds.

They’re still turds.

I'd happily take it in this condition. I have a stock waiting for a 42 or early byf41 sporter to save.

Looks great in the new stock! I’d just keep it as is and enjoy it

You’d be doing that rifle a grave disservice to touch the finish. Leave it alone. There’s enough 98k’s out there that have been the victim of such work! Don’t add another to that pool!
