Murray’s vs Fox K98k Stock

Hoping this would be the best place to post this, but I’m looking to get a new walnut cupped stock for my byf43. I know Lez does great work but does anyone have experience with Murray’s stocks? I also know about the Minelli stocks but haven’t had great luck with them in the past (1903a3 project).

I will let you know when I get mine. Purchased it in Sept 2022 called every so often and told that it was nearly done. Called 2 weeks ago and was told that it needed the rear cavity drilled (K43 stock). Still waiting on its arrival. I am a patient person but at least be straight with me! I will be calling again on Monday to see what the deal is. This best be the best stock I ever purchased.

My $.02 is about Minelis. When Numrich had them for $160, I went for one just to see what i could make of it. Takedown disk and recoil lug came from a mangled 39 Erma stock. Good amount of sanding to get the profile closer to the original on the underside, from trigger guard forward. I was going to pick up another and modify it for a cupped buttplate, but Numrich is sold out and only Liberty Tree has them for $250, and that's not worth it to me.

Thanks for the input! I’ve actually seen this thread and it had me considering a Minelli. I just remembered having to sand so much on a 1903a3 I had years ago I was a bit turned off by the idea… this may be a last resort option for me.

Thanks! I hope it turns out well too!

Question for you about the minelli’s stock: is your rifle a ‘shooter’ & if so, how do you feel about the way the wood is cut out behind the recoil lug? The original design is flat behind the lug, on my minelli’s K98k stock, they used a cylindrical cutter for the front of the receiver, & that cut down into the flat behind the lug. (no pic accessible as I write)
When I saw that, though the wood is new & not oil-soaked, it threw red flags for me. Thinking about filling the ‘well’ with acraglas. It’ll be for a shooter, a ‘37 S/147.

Oh this is good to know! It would be going on a shooter. I have a byf43 that’s mostly matching (minus the bands and stock) that shoots great. Previous owner sanded the shoulder for the rear band smooth so there’s no step in the stock for it to bump up to. Been lurking for a nice cupped stock/hand guard but no luck so far.

Thanks for the info!

I actualy have not noticed this, but will look as soon as I'm able. I have shot the rifle a few times in the Minelis stock, but not a lot. Going through a remodel now, so safe is blocked by a bunch of drywall sheets stacked against it.

I bought one of the Numrich stocks, in part because I thought a finished K98k stock for $160 was laughable. I did not have high expectations. The wood is bubble gum, stained, dimensionally incorrect, and rife with issues.

Functionally.... it works.

Would I recommend it... well, I suppose it is better than nothing. If your building a budget shooter I suppose it is a good option for the price. I would recommend bedding the action with DevCon.

Do you have time to go into more detail? Since getting that stock, i have picked up two original stocks for the rifle, so it's not as important now. I like projects and would put it back on the bench to strip and further reshape , just for fun.

The stocks are oiled, but that came off pretty easily. Dimensionally, i only forused on the handguard and the underside, about mid way on the trigger guard and forward. What else did you feel is that off?

I bought one for similar reasons, but haven't used it yet. After buying several ebay stocks for a shooter project (& one here) that all have recoil lug setback, I thought I'd try the numrich/minelli's stock to see if it was any better value-wise. The cut out behind the lug disappoints me, but mine doesn't appear to be stained, & the grain not bad. It isn't in the same league as a Fox stock as far as a repro stock goes, however.

At the moment, I don't. I started going through the stock in detail, and at some point I will make a short video on some of the bigger issues. If you compare the stock to an original good condition, there is a significant amount of variance.
I really wish fox would resurface… I would really love to buy two walnut stocks.
Save your pennies, there is at least one person in the US working on bringing quality replacement stocks to market.
