Mauser Oberndorf Gew. 98 from 1906

From Jon:

I saw the French guy ask about Mauser reference collection. The French took all the rifle and pistol reference collection from Mauser in 1945. In 1967-70 Period in a Good Will aspect the French Returned some 600 rifles to Mauser firm. I have all the lists. The French military folks sold off pistol collection in Private deals so these pistols ended up all over the world. As for rifle collection Mauser sold off many rifles to German dealers, many special rifles were donated to Oberndorf city Mauser Museum to build up their collection etc. The German deals sold off many Mauser rifles to private folks and other world wide dealers . Jon

Thanks Bruce.
Would Jon consider publishing the lists ?
I’m surprised we returned as many rifles, Germans politely asked to get them back, I would assume. I tend to think we « captured » more than that and some were sold/stolen/used.
Does he know which institution returned the rifles ? Musée de l’Armée ?
De Gaulle might have expected something in return from Kiesinger 😁

A friend pulled (from an Austrian Archive!) a list of foreign automatic guns that Mauser had in their factory collection in 1941, some with short descriptions and details - a list that Mauser for whatever reason by then sent to Austria.

Guys I posted the list over in the K98k section so go there to check it out.
Sn. 140 is on the list! I am attaching the page that shows the rifle that Georg has.
Interesting, thanks, it is also number 23 in Kiste/box number 7. I guess the stamp was applied upon/after the return.

Too cool! Jon, you rock! :) immaculate rifle and written documentation it was in Mauser Factory collection, what else can one wish for. I think I‘m done with collecting Gew.98, lol.

That seems like a good place to call it quits!
