I'm not familiar with Mark Novak, does he have a website? A google search pulls up a whole bunch of un related items?
The rifle, as discussed in the other thread, is likely a commercial rifle, retailed at some point prior to WWI. There are few cases that I think a "salesman" sample is plausible, but they are very few. Countries purchased their rifles whether they were samples, Trials rifles, or otherwise. Small purchases like these are nearly impossible to track due to the sales network, typically they were sold through a retailer as most firms did not deal with small orders.
My own rifle, of the same concept, also sold somewhere before WWI, with no markings other than "fraktur" inspection marks being used at the time on a few obscure contracts at the turn of the century and the company side rail marking. This one is serial number 8.
