Matching byf43 30771d Fresh From The Closet

A buddy convinced me to buy this matching byf43 at a show, I kept telling him it isn't late war enough but I eventually relented and bought the thing after disassembling it. This one definitely has the carried during the war and set it a closet for nearly 80 years look to it (which the guy who I bought it from had it in his closet for 40-50 years). The FSH & cleaning rod weren't correct so I will add ones with a similar amount of wear when I find a good match. Besides that it is what it is, a lower condition used matching byf43.

rifles like this used to be super common and inexpensive. Now, not so much.. Id buy every matching k98k Id find no matter what for the right price !!!
As a guy in my 20's I wish I was around for that! But I'm trying my best to catch up to you guys by buying every matching 98 for the right price!

Interesting blued firing pin….

My byf ‘43 also has a blued one too.

Consensus: depot work, possible post war. Farb said he didn’t recall any manufacturer doing it in house, at time of production.

Admittedly I missed the blued FP til you pointed it out. I appreciate you pointing it out, I don’t think I would’ve caught it or possibly chalked it up to grease/etc.

It wouldn’t surprise me if it was depot, lots of ‘43 guns went thru depot for misc repairs.

These good honest untouched rifles are getting near impossible to find, even collectors will clean up them up with oil or brush off the gunk, along with all the charm. Great piece!

I like it, and here is a cool photograph to go with it that I picked up last month. Thank you for sharing.

That’s a really neat photo! Great pickup!

Surprisingly the gun came mid-day Saturday at OGCA, I didn’t see it my first 2-3 passes thru. I would’ve offered you to take a look at it at my table when I saw ya walking the show but I got distracted by a no series Nagoya T-44 on the back of a guys table!

Always happy to assist a fellow collector when I can. And believe me I know how the ogca show can be distracting sometimes! With that show you never know what you might find!

Wish I could find matching K98ks fresh from the closet at my local gun show, congrats on the rifle! I like the well travelled look this one has.

Honestly, this is a nearly a perfect example to me. I like a little bit of a ‘carried’ look to my rifles, and this ones got it spades. Clearly used but not beat to death.

The blued firing pin is interesting. I assume there is no other obvious indications of depot work?

Ahh, grasshopper...price not everything...I once paid over 10K for a regular 98k...acceptable given the fact it was a once in a lifetime example.
Yes its always nice to get good guns at a good price, but a complete collection will require going over the top and likely several times.

And it was not SS, or a sniper, just a straight Heer issued rifle.

No other signs of depot or obvious repairs that I can find.

I appreciate it Bruce as I sometimes do need a kick in the behind to pay up for some stuff since I’m generally pretty frugal (as you know, since you’ve seen my 4 year old shoes with holes in them that I wear for shows!). I will generally cave and buy “over retail” stuff I need for my collection with only a bit of internal nagging! I’ll be driving to pick up one in October that when I send you pics you’ll think I paid few thousand too much for, but I needed it. So don’t worry I’m in remission for being cheap thanks to some of you on the forum that I talk to!
