Matching 1943 JP Sauer....

EOD - bombs and bullets
Picked up another new one in Syracuse....a matching 1943 JP Sauer...

I am real happy with it...story, FWIW...vet bring back, a guy I know bought it a few years ago from the vets son. A few weeks before he bought it, the vets son shot a 12 point buck with it. It had a coat of varnish all over, including the metal. But it probably protected it nicely, once taken off, the metal has beautiful blue, and almost no wear. Wood is vey nice, hit it with a light coat of Howards after removing the varnish...

Came with an original sling and hood, I added the rod...

Very few WaA's...E/280 marked receiver, so its an Erma supplied receiver. Tyical Sauer bolt, FP on rear face of handle, full serial, no other markings...BC is fxo bh E/37.

Stock is marked Na 3 5 43 in channel, "H" on right side, no other external marks...

almost to good, I wonder were the Vet found it, locked away in a closet. Very nice score!!

I wonder why all the nice stuff shows up on the East Coast.

Beautiful. I always love a good sauer. Hands down my favorite contractor. I'm looking for a 39 and 41to complete my 34-44 set. Its been a long search... lol.

Hello, Congrats!, a great find, I have a matching ce41 from a local vet, how do you recomend to remove the varnish on stock? Howards is that available most hardware stores? Thanks.

Well, a lot of guys might not agree, but I have had the best luck, and it works great for me, with a mixture of acetone, methylene chloride and toluene (which are the basic ingredients in paint strippers anyway).

I wear gloves, and work outside...I just wet a cotton rag good, and wipe it down, re-wetting and using new parts of the rag (as the varnish/finish comes off it will coat the rag, so I rotate it often so I don't just keep smearing the dissolved finish back on). I have never had a problem with it, its never affected the glue (I don't soak it in it, just wipe down), and evaporates quickly and completely.

Rub in a coat of Howards, let sit for 24 hrs, rub off briskly with a soft cotton cloth, and there you go. Some may say its way too harsh (and it would be if you soaked a stock in it...), but its always worked wonder for me....

Of course I would only use it if a stock were finished in some sort of varnish/poly/shellac that wasn't original. As I said, this gun was coated in varnish stem to stern, wood and metal. Not uncommon with bringbacks....the guys loved their varnish and such in the 50's and 60's....

Was covering in varnish a standard ww2 technique for preserving rifles sent home? I obtained a g43 (which had been put in a replacement stock), but the entire metal part of the rifle above the original woodbine was covered with was varnished. (it was old and tough to remove?)

Well done Pzgr! :happy0180:

Johnstanley, that was a postwar thing with vets, bubba, etc. If you're lucky you can sometimes find them where they didn't sand the wood and just put the varnish on it, which is easy to take off and seems to preserve and protect the metal and wood.

Thanks Craig....It is a nice one!

Zacker...denatured alcohol will work on shellac....I am not sure if it will do anything to varnish...straight acetone works good too...I mix it since I work in a lab where we use that stuff like water, and it makes it more effective...
