Hello - good store of BP here so onwards and downwardsNot true BP, but I've also had very good results with 50 grains by weight of Pyrodex sitting under a card / grease cookie / felt wad / bullet stack. It ends up being a slightly compressed load, no filler needed beyond the wad and cookie.
Pyrodex is a bit easier to get locally in a lot of areas, so if you run dry of true BP it's an option.
This may or may not help mate....
Disclaimer this is only tested in my rifles
For my I.G 71 not 71/84
60gr in weight swiss no3 via drop tube
1 x card wad
1 x grease cookie of 50:50 beeswax and Vaseline. (Okay I also add red crayon and strawberry flavor to make it smell nice !!)
2x card wads
390gr soft lead bullet.
Speed : ~ 1247 FPS
Accuracy good at 100 yards, and ~ 30 shots without cleaning before shotgun accuracy emerges.
Note my round has a .455 driving band, and .446 heeled bullet. If I had 71/84 it would likely not chamber, so I would size ~ .446 , but do a throat cast to get right size. I do the same for my Werder M69 Apt, but lighter bullet and load due to their known issues with cracking stocks.
Large pistol primers I useI come at it form the other direction. I shoot a .446 which works great in the 71/84 but paper patch when I load for the 71.
How is ignition on your 71? I had a bear of a time getting mine to be reliable, basically hashing over all the mechanical issues the Germans had with reliable ignition back in the day. I ended up taking a page from their solution and started loading with large pistol primers instead of large rifle and that finally got me consistency. LR works fine in the 71/84 with it's improved FP/cocking piece design, though.
