My friend just picked this helmet up yesterday at the Show of Shows and we are curious about why this twine or yarn was around the liner band.
One of our dealer friends suggested it may have been used to hold a makeshift mask over the face to keep bugs away
Has anyone seen a helmet like this or have any ideas ?

Seen that before. GI likely cut that ugly old net off so the decal would display better. Seen the same done with ugly old chicken wire.

Some more modest remains of a net in this one...

Still a cool overpainted M.35 Luft BT. Very cool helmet JM, clearly an ex-whitewash

plus it's a much harder to find Luft. M35 re-issue. I would say a ratio of 100 to 1 or more for every heer to luft re-issue you see.

the net definitely looks like an issued net.

Nice Luft lid. How were the prices on the lids out there this year? A good friend of mine went for the first time and face timed me. I was amazed at the size of the room and the number of tables. He said the same thing about the dearth of legit K98's. I am definitely going to go out there next year.

I wasn't keeping too close of an eye on helmet prices, the ones I'd checked were about what I expected them to be, maybe slightly inflated for the Show of Shows. I saw a handful that were priced low, but I wasn't helmet shopping this weekend.

My friend paid $600 for the lid I posted here.

I found three of the things on my list -
-a 4UT marked Beretta 1935 pistol ( 4UT means it was produced under German control of the factory
- a Japanese Type 30 bayonet with a really nice frog still on the scabbard
- a German gas mask in the canister dated 1939
