LSR, Turret, ZF4, and ect. Scope Can Straps

I think there are at least three different styles or makers of scope can straps. Maybe more or less, but this is what I have found.

These all came on original cans and are not like the repros I have purchased to make a comparison. I think they are original, but you are welcome to add your can straps for comparison also or say why you think they are wrong.

Number One.

Number Two Strap. This one is SC with a Fir type Tree marked. I'll research the maker later.

Good idea Brian and thanks for starting this thread.

Likely a good source of info would be from guys that collect field equipment items. They may recognize more of these straps. In my limited experience, the straps you posted are what were likely used most on scope cans.

Here is a strap I was told was for a ZF4 scope case.

Great post Brian, do you own all three? Number 2 is maker marked Schmöle und Co., Menden, same logo as sling buckles.

Yes, they are mine. I bought them maybe 8 to 10 years ago when I was really searching hard. #1 came with the G43 wood case. I’m not a huge G43 collector, but have one of what I could find to go with my one rifle. I know the wood case is good and think strap is probably OK. But, like I said G43 stuff is sort of outside what I normally look for, unless it is a good deal.

The other two came off original K98 Scope Cans. Those are probably the best I’ll be able to do.

Yes, maybe so. My #1 G43 strap is a thicker weave than yours. I’m not able say other than I’m 100% sure my wood G43 case is real. The strap came with it and the whole thing was a deal. The strap looked like it could be possibly good, but maybe not if you say the one you have pictured is the only good G43 type.

The other two 98K straps I feel are as close to being 100% as you can get and say original for a strap. That’s my opinion.

I actually don't own that strap. It belonged to a friend and I saved pictures.

Good discussion.

The material of strap #1 looks like Bundeswehr and I have never seen them with metal being painted.

Strap #2 is not for scope cans but for the MGZ 40 can.

Strap #3 appears to be authentic

my comment on the other thread was on the strap. I have yet to see one in that material that was considered legit. Im open minded and do not like to say never as Ive hardly seen every scope strap made.

The weave on the gas mask strap is very specific and is of natural fibers . The more common equipment straps used for optical cases seems to be a different weave and of synthetic material. The clips vary to at least 1/2 dozen variations as well..

Obviously there is a huge abundance or gas mask cans and straps and canteen clips so there is a pretty inexpensive source to make very expensive straps.. just saying.

A well worth thread IMHO

While I'm not knowledgeable enough I might want to point out that I highly thank nigromontanus for his post, he knows these items and therefore I fully trust in what he mentioned in here.

In this context worth mentioning: one of my scope cans came with a bread bag strap on it. Generally a tough question since nearly all cans come without straps.

For comparison. This turret can and strap came as a set.

I bought this strap at one of the Louisville shows a while back. A dealer that I knew had a real, but badly repainted turret can with this strap on it. He was gracious enough to sell me just the strap.

I’ve got the same type of strap on my LSR can

nice.. See how the weave matches the weave type on the can strap.. Gas mask can straps have a slightly courser weave and fake cans also have a more course weave on the can strap. Easiest way to point out a bad can is look at the strap.
The material used on the fake cans reminds me of a GI duffle bag strap.

I am hoping the group can provide some insight as to two straps I acquired last year - I suspect they are both MGZ 40 can straps but am hoping otherwise - I am using one of the two on my G/K43 wooden ZF4 rig case at the moment.

The first picture is provided for scale with my ZF39 can and strap. As to the loose straps:

1) The strap on the right has L&F marked end buckles, is ~50" long tip-to-tip, is ~1" wide, with a center buckle ~1.25" wide.

2) The strap on the left (middle in the first picture) has S|C marked end buckles, is ~47" long tip-to-tip, is ~1" wide, with a center buckle ~1.5" wide.
