Low Cost Shooter Sniper Build Recommendations

Update!

So, got the Accumount split ring high turret mounts and a Weaver K4 - the mounts are 26mm, the Weaver is 1" but came with spacers - It's at the smithy now getting drilled and tapped. I picked the Weaver up for about $30. So, all in, I'm at $200 for the mounts and $30 for the scope and about $100 for the mounting. $330 out the door. (I know this offends many but had to do it).

While awaiting the Smith to finish his work, I ran across a Carl Zeiss Diatal D 4X32 with a German #1 Retical on eBay. No claw mounts or other mountings soldered onto it. I paid $225 for it. Did I overpay for it? Is this a good scope to match the Mauser - just not sure if I made the right decision on the scope.

This pushed the build to $525.

The Diatal D is a nice scope while being postwar, 225 is a good average price I see across sites.
Unless you're looking for a all period correct mock sniper, minus the split ring high turret mounts, I'd say you'll be fine with either scope.

Is your 1903A4 one of the replica rebuilds or original? My area seems to have a few floating around for pretty cheap, been on the fence about it.

Besides Spielauer mounts which are rarely offered for sale, are there any other repro high turret mounts (in my case I only need the bases) on the market that from a quality and appearance standpoint come close to matching the original parts?

Thanks for the info - I'll post some pics when the gunsmith finishes it up! I like the Diatal - amazingly clear optics and love the German#1 reticle!

My 1903 is a Gibbs made in 2011 - fun to shoot but the M73 Scope is tough on my old eyes. Felt I needed more magnification, which justified, in my mind, the scope swap to the K4.

I don't believe so. To my knowledge his were pretty much the best when it comes to reproductions. All that is available at this point is Accumounts and RSM (garbage).

"low cost" is relative.

I finished something similar last fall. I have wanted a K98 Turret Sniper for a while. I started with a Yugo capture/rework rifle, and used the Accumounts split-ring HT mounts, installed by Vaughn. I tried and returned two reproduction scopes (from Sarco), they looked pretty but had a lot of slop in the adjustment. I ended up watching Ebay and picking up a steel body post-war Henzolt Wetzlar.

I know the split rings are not correct, but the advantage of not needing to take apart the scope to install it, as well as the option of using a 1" tube (with spacers) if need be outweigh the fact it isn't a perfect period type mount. There is also no risk of anyone mistaking it for anything other than what it is, a reproduction.

I dropped it in a Norwegian stock I got from Tommy in The Netherlands. I am really happy with how it turned out.

It shoots pretty good, too, 5 rounds at 100 yards:

WOW! Thats exactly what I'm hoping to Accomplish, emcon5! That looks beautiful! As for me, I'm still waiting for it to return from the gunsmith - I really like the stock, where'd you pick it up!!

I went with a RC ZF-41, original base, reproduction scope. Fun for what it is. I have an original scope being restored.

There is a guy named "Tommy" in the Netherlands who sells Norwegian K98 stuff on Gunboards, user name "us1945". I don't think he has any stocks left. The stock and bands match. Unfortunately it didn't come with a buttplate, so that is an Ebay repro. Ii should be in the white, but it doesn't bother me enough to do anything about it, yet.

Just a precaution they can turn you into an addict...
Love the PEM and PU versions.

There is a guy on gunboards currently called Juno1945 that has handful of some nice norwegian matching stocks, they are all flatplate though, with one phostphate finished cupped, that looks like it has a zf41 repair or some optic.

Sweet jesus, you went for the whole bubble gum card collection. :D

Did you retouch any of those stocks? They look gorgeous.

Thanks, I have a few more to go before I have an example of all of the variants (double claw, low turret, swept back, objective mount, G43). No I have not redone any of the stocks. I did remove the varnish on the Norwegian capture stock seen on the K-98k PU and poly that was on the zf-41's stock.
