Louisville SOS report

I thought I'd report on the show for those here, especially regarding Gew98's. The highlight of the show was the Radfahrergeweher our WaPrüf (Craig B.) had on display. It was every bit as nice as I'd imagined. He said he might do his Colonial G98 next year.

There were the usual 8-10 G98's there. I met Denny Gaither and saw the '07 MO Gew98, he'd already sold it to a fellow at Bruce98k's table(s).

I picked up the '16 Danzig from Bruce, am working on cleaning/improving the bore today.

Scott B had a unit marked '99 Danzig at his table(s), a correct period matching rework, that I didn't thoroughly examine, so just set it back and didn't even inquire on the price. See explanation posted later in this thread.

There was a bolt m/m '17 Spandau Gew98m, rare Weimar naval proofed on the receiver and Nordsee marked on the bolt takedown tube. It had the worst duff cut repair I've ever seen, a few inches back from the rear band. It looked like a 5 year old child had used that gray colored JB Weld, and it was slathered on about 1/8" wide. He was asking $700, said he'd take $600. I've got a couple of extra Weimar Gew98 slings, one to Nordsee, but couldn't justify buying that trainwreck because I had a sling for it. I made a point Thursday to not go look at it again to be tempted. It was gone Friday morning, sold to one of Scott Bugan's table helpers. Anyway, it was a rare one.

I talked with our Amberg (Wolfang) a few times. He picked up a Gew98 scope with mounts on Thursday, and as I recall he said the scope was Gew #'d. Hopefully he was able to score some more goodies before leaving for that long haul back to Germany.

Jerry Coates was there but without his display of Gew98 snipers that he had last year. He's probably going to do a display next year of the 5 (or 6) Gew98's marked to the 146th Regiment that was in Palestine later in the war, if he can get some period photos for the display. As we were talking Mark Weringa came by, I introduced them, started again talking about those gewehrs from the 146th, and come to find out both Mark & Jerry were there at Navy Arms in 1992 when a big shipment of militaria came in, including the 146th Reg G98's. Mark was going though crates looking for rare ammo & scored quite alot. He thought alot of the stuff was from Lithuania. Jerry said they had a big box of cleaning rods, mostly Gew98, cheap. Sounds like it would have been a real opportunity to pick up Imperial goodies....

There were a few other Gew98's at the show, nothing specially & mismatched. I saw a few decent Gew88's & a bolt m/m Gew91. I did pick up a nice Gew98 lid with most of it's gray paint, fairly cheap. That's about it.

I was kinda bummed I didn't go this year. But, things worked out fine. I went to my local monthly show this morning and cleaned up.. Also a minty set of uboats earlier in the week.

As for the sos I had two friends there giving out reports.. As with most large shows good and bad were reported. They both found items so I guess it wasn't a wasted trip. There is always something to buy there.. If I start saving now I might have the extra cash to go..

On Saturday, there was a very nice VCS 1916 (all matching except rod and generally unmessed with), and a sanded and well polished but all matching Sternegewehr Spandau 1916 "4" suffix.

That was at the gunshow and not at the SOS, right?

A great report Mike, sounds like many of us missed a fine time! (and some opportunities..)

Since my flight back home was canceled, I have some extra time to admire that WWI scope in my Louisville hotel room.
It is a blued A.-G. Hahn Cassel 3x scope with matching front and rear ring. A scope variation I did not know before. All other blued Hahn 3x scopes I've see before had the "Mod. C" inscription. This one not.
Photos later in the scope section when I'm back home.
One seller had a very nice interwar Zeiss Zielvier scope with original rings and case and a WWI Hensoldt scope case, but from my point of view, all pieces were heavily overpriced.

Apart from that Hahn scope I only picked up some rare RG34 cleaning kits and an ammo pouch for the G71/84 rifle.

No, both were at the SOS. I didn't bother walking the gunshow. Its usually picked clean during setup.

That surprises me they showed up Saturday. Possibly picked up from the gunshow dealer set-up that started Friday afternoon. Who knows...would have liked to have seen the Schilling.

I don't bother staying around for the gunshow anymore. By then my legs have had enough slow walking those concrete floors....

I haven't seen either of them. ;-(

Covered both shows; IMO public attendance at both down. Lots of K98ks, G33/40s, G/K43s at SOS, nearly all overpriced for condition; most "improved." Two "Death's Head" P.08s at SOS as well; both extremely dubious. SOS shut down an hour early in anticipation of bad weather.

Seems I did'nt miss much by working and then driving to West Va to help a buddy. I noticed the local radio ads ( I'm 50 miles south of lousyville ) had ron dixon touting his NGD but not a mention of the SOS like in previous years ads by that loud mouth.
Having better times going to the two times a year knob creek shoot !.

Someone bought some type of Gew98 with a trench mag within 45min of set up on Friday.
I guess it was a big deal, I didn't ask so see it up close but was wondering if anyone knows what it was..

:)
..

Forgot to mention an outstanding display of Granatwerfer 16s, projectiles, tools, manuals etc. Too bad displays are not actively encouraged.

At least 3 S42s in the SOS; did not check them but noticed one priced at $8500... One G29(ö) with mismatched (K98k?) bolt. The G98 w trench mag was collector-assembled; the matching floorplate, spring and follower were separate but sold with it. I've seen better mags.

nothing extraordinary! two hard to find post WWII variations + a Ky1941, an arr41 and a pre war export cleaning kit with most probale fake Nazi stamps.

Thanks. A Ky1941 is always a good find!

In the original start of this thread I noted the '99 Danzig had a humped bolt, which was incorrect, as I failed to examine the whole rifle. I've since gone back and revised the post. When I saw the early maker/date G98, I picked it up, looked at the bolt serial # and receiver serial #, noted that the bolt serial font was different and not a typical period rework (an old serial # lined through). I glanced to see the rifle was unit marked and set the rifle back down. If I'd examined the rifle further I'd have noticed it was a period rebarrel and the new barrel serial # font matched the new bolt, therefore legit.

My apologies for posting the initial incorrect info on this rifle and to Scott B. For those that don't know Scott, he's an honest, knowledgeable collector/dealer with an impeccable reputation.

feldmutze, that 99 Danzig came to light a few years ago at OGCA, and Scott beat another noted collector out of the rifle over the phone and then gloated & crowed about it in a very public way. His actions caused that collector to pretty much bow out of the collecting field and pursue other interests. Not all collectors hold Scott B. in such high regard.

This is not the place for that discussion, there will be no carrying on of personal feuds between those who like Scott and those that do not on the two forums I moderate.

As for what feldmutze said, it is entirely accurate, Scott is "an honest, knowledgeable collector/dealer with an impeccable reputation", whether you like him or not is irrelevant to that fact.
