Looking to buy my first k98

An update on my first K98 purchase. I received the rifle yesterday and was initially happy with it. I looked it over a little more closely today and noticed a split along the laminate to the left of the floor plate and trigger. I haven't taken it apart to see if it goes through the rifle but I was assured that there were no cracks. When I sent the seller this photo today he sent me a ? And then says oh that's just a light split in the laminate. I'm new to collecting old guns. Could anyone tell me how big of a problem this is? I'm not thrilled that it's near the trigger and I paid for an all matching K98 with no Cracks all original. Thanks

Now that I am learning more about these rifles I realize I've got myself a real gem of a rifle. I took it apart for inspection and cleaning. No cracks. The last pic I posted above is just an inch long slight separation of the laminate. I could tell when I took apart the rifle that it had never been owned by a collector. It had hair stuck to it and some old dirt. Looks to me like it sat in someones closet untouched for yrs. Bore is shiny. I'll post some pics soon.

The slight laminate separation shows in your post #8. Compared to the overall condition of the rifle, I don't think it is anything to worry about. Laminate stocks sometimes will have that happen.

I saw it at the bottom of the photo after the fact. Judging from what I see them going for on Gunbroker and the Classic arms RC prices, I think I did good. No Duffle cut either. It's a straight up VG condition all matching dou44 with no import marks.

I agree with you and the previous assessment of the crack. It should not cause any problems in that location. I think you did fine.
 
It was smart of you to ask more seasoned collectors before putting your money down. Congrats & nice rifle!

Thank You. I did not know a whole lot about the German K98 until I joined this board and still have much to learn. I am grateful for the advice I got from the fellas here.

Hello, i know this is some time after you made this post but i also purchased a dou44 in July for $665 #8388 U-block with a little less bluing than yours but much better wood. I is all matching numbers but a different manufacturer for the floor plate and trigger guard (byf) but still 8388.

They can show up with byf stamped lower metal. Mauser Oberndorf supplied a lot of producers with these parts.
