Looking for information on this model 98

A single claw mounted sniper rifle, however if you can provide photos of the left side of the mounts will be able to determine more info and if real.

bnz single claw. Do you have the scope and rings? Could you also get a closer up pic of the top and both sides of the receiver?

Can you show pics of the serial number on front base also a photo showing rear base from top side , I want to see if the rear base has the screw , because it appears this one may not have it , It appears to be a 1943 Single Claw .

Looks original 1943 Single Claw to me and missing the serial numbered scope spring push type catch on rear base. Nice looking though.

IMG_0936.jpgI know it’s real because my great uncle sent it back, just curious on rarity, which region it might have been issued in, how many were produced. I unfortunately don’t have the scope but all numbers match. It is pretty impressive at the range also

Very nice piece, shame the scope is missing.
I think you'd have better idea of where it came from by asking any family members still around that knew your great uncle's service history and if he ever mentioned his deployment.
Records are hard enough to nothing to come by after the defeat of Germany.

You can read more about the single claw from the link to matt's site in my first comment.

Thanks unfortunately all my great uncles and grandfather have passed, I never once heard any of them talk about anything from the war. As much as I would have liked the history lesson they would have gave on it I always assumed that they most likely experienced things that they didn’t want to talk about

Does the Rear Base on Your SC have a Screw like you see in this photo ?? I can not make one out in the photo You posted that why I am asking .

Also the missing parts for your Rear Base could be replaced but they would have to be reproduction ones . In my 20+ years of collecting I have only once come across original SC Ring/Base Parts and these happened to be the matching set of SC rings for a good friends and forum members SC rifle . I am sure Georg will recall this one .

No that is missing on the rear base.

Looks like it’s there Dave, the screw slot was just completely lost in the post mounting contour job. It’s tough to see under the tar staining.

Thanks Clay , sure looks like it has one but it is very obscured in this photo .

Your best bet as to figuring out any details about the rifle’s origins would be to find out what unit your relative was in, and when he landed overseas. While it won’t give you anything precise - like a city - it could give you a country or region. This info would be on discharge paperwork, maybe uniform photos with visible patches, etc.

The plus is that you have a very rare sniper rifle which seems to be all matching numbers (can't tell for the barrel bands, stock, and other parts).

The bad is that the scope and the ring misses. But also the pin with the locking cam from the rear base is missing. This will be even worse to obtain, but fortunately aren't this complicated.

It would be appreciated whether you could do a set of pictures of your rifle and post those. Best outside with natural light, or at least indoor using natural light.

Generally, you can check this pinned thread for general information on the Single Claw sniper rifles: https://www.k98kforum.com/threads/steyr-single-claw-rifles.40932/

Like Nirvana said, you can request a copy of his DD214 (I think St Louis???). DD214s of that time have countires they served and will have his unit. With that info, you can track unit history.
