wow, perfect example of why NOT to buy from amazon. in this case, we know what the price ‘should be’, think about it next time before you push the ‘buy’ button on anything they offer…..
It's a third party seller, not Amazon. I'm not going to go to bat too hard to defend Amazon's honor, they suck, but in this case they're about as responsible for the price as GB is for someone throwing an RC up for $5k to see if any idiots bite.
It's a fishing expedition from a book seller who has one copy. This is pretty common if you go digging for out of print books. As soon as it's not trivial to grab a new copy any more people will start throwing out these screw ball listings in the hopes that someone is desperate enough.
Here's another good example:
https://www.amazon.com/Geschichte-M...undzwanzigjahrigen-Gewehrfabrik/dp/B075JZMBCB
That's a pretty good book. I've got a copy on the desk next to me right now. Out of print for the last 90 years or so. I'd recommend it to anyone seriously into the history of Mauser Oberndorf, albeit with the note that you can't take everything it says at 100% face value being a Nazi-era corporate history and all. But it's very much not a $1500 book. I was patient and scored mine off ebay for $200 about five years ago.
The Korn book on Mauser patents is another good example. Whenever some book dealer snags a copy and throws it on Amazon it's always for truly stupid prices, often 4 figures. If you hunt around ebay you can usually find it in the $200-300 ballpark, though, an if you're willing to head over to Abe Books, Biblio, etc. and wait a few weeks you can often find it cheaper.
Books, rifles, beanie babies, it doesn't matter - if someone thinks it's collectible someone else will throw one up for inflated prices as idiot bait.
