K98’s: Manufacturers, Years and Value

Wow that was quick. 😳 Did the stock disk and plates on the butt look super shiny like they'd been polished or wheeled?

Took his toys and went home...
I took the pictures off because I’m not going to buy it and don’t want to put someone else’s firearm on the internet…

Yes, it looked polished almost to a mirror, and the bluing was excellent. The bolt had numbering that looked off for me but I wanted the opinion of others more informed; the fact that RyanE confirmed my suspicion meant I had my question answered. I don’t want a defaced piece of history.

The handguard is basically ruined, but not a bad gun overall. Price wasn't too bad. Early engraved receiver which is tough. to find.

I didn't see any glaring issues.
Wondering what you thought of that one. Or anyone else for that matter.
Changing subjects from G33/40 to k98. My budget is 4k, looking for all match decent quality. Did any of you see this one before it went? I saw last minute but was never going to go over budget. What makes this worth that, and is it worth that? I’m trying to learn for the future so I don’t get taken like I almost did with the 33/40.
Thanks guys!

My thoughts are “Christmas money spends easier”. That can’t be a $4,000 rifle? More like 3.25k?

Original G33/40 handguards, cleaning rods, and front sight hoods are basically impossible to find. Rod and hood repros have been made and are occasionally available.

Two things. Some of the photos are curiously out of focus JUST ENOUGH that you can't make out certain details. I also really don't like this front band. Odd that all those drag (or file) marks are right where the serial number is. For $4k+ I'd want a 'no questions' piece and for me this one isn't it.

If better photos were taken and originality confirmed, what could be said regarding the condition? The condition is everything to collectors, and what is the condition of this one overall?

Assuming your confidence was there because better photos existed, how does the condition of this stack up compared to others $4k plus? I’m trying to understand if this is poor condition for this price.

Second question is about Sauer and Sohn and year. What makers are most desireable and which years are generally best? Thanks all.

A lot of questions but I'll try to answer. I have a lot of questions about that one that I simply can't answer with those photos. For me personally, there's NO CHANCE this is a $4400 gun. For condition, there are 2 examples of '41 JPS pieces you can compare in the Picture Reference section. Lots of stuff missing on the stock of that GB one. Hopefully someone who's more of a JPS guy can pick this up and expound on it.

Its pretty subjective. Mauser Oberndorf has always been very popular with collectors, which seems to often give MO rifles a little bump even though all but the earliest and latest of guns are pretty common. Generally speaking the really early production rifles and the really late production rifles (with oddities) seem to be the most valuable. But there is no real set scale of value.
