K98K Byf 44 vet bringback

This K98 was brought back by my great grandfather while serving in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry , 2nd Armoured Regiment, Lord Strathconas Horse in North Africa, Italy and northern Europe. This rifle seems to be a mix between an Oberndorf byf K98 and a Steyr G.29o, thats my best guess anyway.

One thing is for sure. Somebody out there has Steyr 12/34 carcass and sure needs that stock! o_O
Maybe you could trade for a the byf 44 stock that you need.

Yeah that stock needs to go to someone with the appropriate rifle for it. Put an actual 98k stock and bands on it as it should have. It just doesn’t look right as is now

I've thought about it but I'd like to preserve it in the way it came back from the war, I think it keeps it unique from other Mausers and by grandfather carved his initials where the bolt disassembly hole would be so I couldn't bring myself to trade it lol

A very odd marriage.
  • It appears the hand guard "clip" just forward of the receiver is somehow wired on. Is it loose w/o the wire job?
  • What does the rear sight look like?
  • Also, is the original HG clip just forward of the rear sight ground off?
  • I'm guessing your GFather made this marriage.

We may never know the story on how it got cobbled together that way, or by who exactly, but I would agree with keeping it that way if that's how he brought it home. It's hard to fathom a German armorer could have assembled it that way.

Yes as soon as the hand guards came off its was loose, wasn't even wired to the gun in any way I could take it right off the end of the barrel.
Some rear sight pictures before I put the hood sight back on
sort of, the front handguard screw broke many years ago and as a dumb child I did some not so great metal work but I did manage to get the screw out
Yeah he disassembled and hid it when he was shipping home after the war so maybe that's when it was created in its current form who knows lol
