K98 holy grail…

This bayonet came my way today. It’s a Paul Weyersberg wartime code lettered crs. The holy grail part is that is was made in 1945 when very few were produced. The bayonet shows all the signs of a late war produced model. The scabbard has been painted black post war. Apart than that the piece is in nice shape. It came with an odd frog that I believe to be period. Here are some pics.

That rough metal finishing is great. Really like how crude these late war pieces are. I can't speak to the frog, but I'll be watching to see if anyone else has an opinion.

Congratulations on your acquisition. About the frog, I kind of remember seeing one like it posted here not too long ago. If I remember correctly, it is a late war pattern. It appears to have white mold on it. You need to address that as soon as possible and keep it away from other leather items until you do. It will spread. To get rid of it or at least stop it`s growth, make a paste of baking soda and white distilled vinegar. You want the paste to be more on the dry side than wet. You can rub it on using your fingers and a soft bristle brush ( a toothbrush works well). The brush is used to get the paste into the stitches and around the threads. Cover the whole frog including inside the pocket and loop. Let it dry thoroughly. Then wipe off dried paste with a soft dry cloth. Use the brush to remove the paste out of the stitched areas and places the cloth can`t get to. You may have to repeat procedure. Then keep it in a moisture-controlled environment and watch out for the mold. It may have penetrated into the leather and come back.

Nice find of the rare piece, any WaA519 on pommel? I would tend to dress frog variation here.

Congratulations !!!
Under what circumstances did you acquire it?

Best regards

..... no there’s no WaA519 on the pommel. Is this unusual for crs in ‘45?

Great find Len, congrats! I have a database of 1945 S84/98. The 45crs are a mixed bag as far as pommel WaA. Some have the WaA, others do not. It's probably a bit over 50% are WaA pommel stamped. Would also be interested in the scabbard WaA at the finial ball. Is there a SW WaA519 on the ball (usually reverse)? Many thanks in advance .....

Nothing strange when is not stamped on pommel, as mentioned major numbers are in 4xxx range, so evidently brought major of these by US Gis, the reported 4737 by John J. was reported with 519 but maybe Slash has more accurate reports, i would tend to opinion, higher numbers were not proofed probably. Other point is that the surface looks like parkerised or not visible light blue here. Anyway its period.

The 4737 piece mention above is an orphaned scabbard only. It is however stamped with a WaA519 on the finial ball. Jacobi no longer owns it. The WaA519 stamps are completely random as far as when observed - some early examples do not have the marking - some late examples do. The latest confirmed 45crs has WaA519 on both the pommel and scabbard ball. Very little, if any consistency. It should be noted however that the sample size is very small.

Hi Slash, there is a WaA519 on the ball of the scabbard.
