K98 from my friends estate

I would like some info on this K98. It is from a friends estate, he unexpectedly died 2 months ago - yeah bummer, I miss him). so, the kids each got a number of nice things, and they were there to help me with the estate. Nice kids (they are in their mid-40's, at least). This was bought in 2016 for $2,000 and its a beaut, not reblued, sharp markings (yes I know he liked to fill in the numbers, but he used ultra fine ink pens (it will come out), so it kept the detail, better than grease pencil.
I'm looking for a decent description, approx value and any hints and tips, such as sell the fake sling, etc.
and the old, trusted value

i thank you for your time for my lack of knowledge :)

Well, $2k would have been way overpaying in 2016, stock looks to have been sanded and pimp shined with some sort of shiny finish, so that's a big hit (I could be wrong, but that's what seems to me from these pics). Stock should be numbered on the keel, and stock and handguard in the channels, do they match?

Its a 1940 Mauser Oberndorf, it would have to be fully disassembled to ensure all the numbers match, really hard to give any details until that is verified, but even if they do, that stock may really degrade the value. By like 50%...

Thanks, a friend told me it was shiny and that it hurt value. Guesses on value?

More pictures outside

If it is 100% matching (and you can't be sure unless you take it apart, a 1940 would basically have every part numbered) and the stock has been sanded/coated with finish, I would guess $1600-$1800. The stock is a huge question mark...

If anything is mismatched, $1300-$1500 depending on what's not matching...but that's just my SWAG...throw it on Gunbroker, who knows, people there will pay a lot of money for guns a collector would have nothing to do with because they are low information buyers.

thanks guys - I was unsure how to tear it down, I'll youtube in the next few days and then take lots of pictures

I was surprised that he paid this much, but it does look very little used. I imagine to a non K98 collector that is....

If the stock was sanded then it was relatively lightly done. I think it originally has some bumps and scrapes that someone decided they wanted smoothed out. I’ve seen wayyy worse though.

If all else is correct then I’d say $2k is pretty fair. 42 1940 code is a pretty desirable 98k, and one’s with zero issues can bring considerably more than that.
