Just brought home my grandfathers collection and I'm hoping to get a little more information on this beauty.

I'm having a hard time identifying some of the markings on this rifle and I've also had a really hard time finding one that has the same style safety. Any resources you all could point me to?

I tried to take pictures of each location I saw an identifying mark but if there are more needed let me know where and I'll post them.

You'll need to post more pictures so we can verify 100% what you have. But so far what you're showing is a long side rail k98k sniper rifle with the correct key safety on the bolt. Please show pictures of the mount, receiver, buttplate, more of the stock, etc.

And did this rifle come with any optics by chance?

If everything checks out in the end. Well then you've just inherited a very valuable rifle.

Check this link out sir this will help you see what details were looking for. Even better this one is really close in serial number range to this one as well.

LSR sniper rifle. Small L on receiver indicating thickened sidewall. Key safety found only on siderails. Well done!

The “l” indicates an Astrawerke produced receiver, not a sniper mark.

As Jordan said additional photos of base, stock, key safety, and bands would help. Looks like a promising rifle so far.

I just edited the post to include a link to a second batch of photos. I took these before I had a chance to read that article above so I hope they help. I'll read this today and upload another batch with what I learn.

I've been looking for the scope since my grandfather passed nearly 20 years ago but I never found any scopes or anything that looked like it would attach to this. How hard is it to find one of these to buy?

I would also like to shoot this some day and once I started down the rabbit hole of 8mm Mauser ammo I got quickly lost. Can someone point me to what ammo I can use in this?

Thank you all so much for your help!

these scopes arent the hardest of all sniper scopes to find just kinda expensive. Anyone who knows what they have will ask 2500-3500 .
Your rifles looks mostly complete the stock was cut either to ship it home or it way lightly sporterized.

You have a 1945 Gustloff LSR (Long Side Rail) sniper rifle manufactured in Weimar Germany. The stock has been heavily sanded, refinished and shortened.

While I wouldn’t shoot it with an original scope on it, if you are going to shoot it I would go with Federal, S&B, or Hornady ammunition.

Scopes aren’t necessarily hard to find, just takes research and a few grand.

while I wouldn’t disagree with any of mike’s ammo suggestions, I would add PPU to the list. (if you can find it) I’ve found it to be of excellent quality & most importantly not loaded too hot for an 80 year old rifle with mostly unknown maintenance history. the caliber you want is “8mm Mauser” in the US, 7.92x57mm (or 8x57). SOMETIMES it may be marked 8x57 JS (or IS) that’s the right stuff.

DO NOT BUY 8x57 JRS which is a rimmed cartridge & won’t fit your rifle!

Its a pet peeve of mine when browsing on gunbonker that K98k rifles are frequently listed in the ‘specs’ tab as being 8x57JRS, which they are NOT. Its probably a cut & paste thing, but it bugs me that no one pays attention!
