Just bought this, did I get a good deal? BYF 44

OMG. The receiver looks like it's got leprosy. Don't know what is going on with the stock, but the butt plate has seen a wire wheel. Does the seller have a return policy?

I would not fire live rounds unless you can find out what happened to cause the exterior “finish” And can determine it is structurally sound.
I’m thinking Stan may be on target, fire damage, if so I would think it unsafe.
Looks like it may have had a soldered on scope base? That would explain the modified bolt handle.
Unless you are wanting a display piece only, I would return it if possible.

The stock may have been charded in a fire, and saw a belt sander to clean it up. (Pure speculation on my part.)

Thank you. Y’all’s expertise is much appreciated. Ive always wanted to own one, and the price has just gotten out of control for them. I’ll keep on searching

Well ya might try searching right here. Much more honest examples from people in the know here. Quote a price range and ya just might have some luck.
Thanks Remfan, I definitely get that impression. Id like to spend below $1000 on a decent one. Doesn’t have to be anything rare or perfect, just want a matching to almost matching shooter with a good bore.

Got a reply from the seller. Not wanting returns unfortunately. I will check it out and upload photos this week when i receive it. As with everything on GB, who tf knows what I may have gotten myself into. Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. If anyone has an old k98k they’d be willing to part with for a trade+money, let me know!

Yep, there are 2 types that get into K98s, those that do their homework beforehand and those that don't. I'll admit, I got burned for my own stupidity, maybe it was the Adderall and energy drinks mixed with some MAAAAAD DOG. You are lucky, your lesson was $400, mine was much more. If you want to get into Mausers, stick around read posts, and ask questions. You can place a WTB ad in the marketplace, but I'd kinda hang out for a bit because there is a lot going on in the world of collecting K98s.

Pics aren't clear. But Looks like some extreme moisture damage. Could have been in a basement, after which someone possibly tried to weld the corrosion--who knows? Wheeled, said screw it, and tried to cover it up via a poor re-bluing job. No way this was turned on a lathe like the seller says.

It always is good to take a positive attitude and try to make the best of it, but honestly I would not even display that.

Not an expert on these weapons, but based on almost 3 decades of mfg experience, from the pictures it appears to me at some point it was drilled and tapped for a scope base. Those appear to be plugged, and then a base was soldered on poorly, and removed with the same quality. I would think if it checks safe by a competent gunsmith, it might be a really good shooter. FWIW.
