As a counterpoint, they were using solid wood stocks when they settled the 98k pattern. No finger grooves on the early rifles either.
Yes, I had also wondered about the grooves being an issue on laminated stocks as well, but as mentioned, the decision to drop them pre-dated the laminated stock. They did scallop out the bolt relief on laminated stocks with no issues. Also as a side note, the early G.24(t) rifles with walnut stocks did have the grooves, but they were dropped on the laminated stock later versions. Probably just a carry over at first from Vz24 stock production methods. They are handy, but it would seem deemed unnecessary by the Germans after the previous use by them on prior models.
