A trio of KS98 sawbacks with colonial markings. All to the South West African Schutztruppe.

Interesting to note the one with scabbard #10807 is a 1914 Amberg with Prussian acceptance and the later wooden grips. By my understanding one of the hardest KS98 to find.

Here's my entry with a question, G88 by Steyr, dated 1890 with unit markings. I take this as 40th Reserve Infantry Regiment, 2nd battalion, rifle # 177.

Any way to research the unit?

Hey G2,

It's a bit odd on the marking, I don't recall seeing both the cursive and regular R to signify the Reserve regiment in the past, you might check with Jeff Noll or over on the Luger Forum to confirm the marking, most of the experts on Imperial marks are there, but I would guess 40th Reserve as well. If you are looking for WWI info 40th Reserve mobilized with the 28th Reserve Division in 1914 but later moved to the 115th Division in 1915.

Looks like it saw pretty active service on the Western Front, if you want to dig further do a search on the German version of the regiment name, Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 40, German sources are much better on unit history than American sites typically.

Received info from my post on the Luger Forum. The script R is for Reserve and the designation is Company and not Battalion. Always more to learn.

Garde-Schützen-Bataillon, 3rd company, weapon no. 206.


Bayonet from the field testing/trial phase 1898-1899. Roughly 10.000 trial bayonets were produced, some of them were given to 4 specific units (including the Garde-Schützen) for field testing. After this bayonet design was found to be satisfactory, mass production slowly started and the rest of the unissued trial bayonets were goven to other guard and navy units.

The script R is for Reserve ...

Germany stopped using the R. R. for reserve infantry regiment in 1897 and simply replaced it with a single R. Thats why the "double" R. R. unit marking can only be found on pre 1898 weapons.
