I found this rifle in my grand father's attic.

Hello,
I am french and I found this WW2 Rifle rolled up in a mattress in my Grand father's attic
I look out for informations online and I found your great forum with a lot of knowledge about those weapons.

From the etchings, it is writen "Spandau 1910" "KAR 98". I will post the pictures, I have taken today.
I would like to know if it has some value and what I can do of it (sell it, keep it or give it to the police ... ?).
The problem is that in France those rifles in working order are forbidden and I don't know what to do with it.

This is a rare WW1 Spandau made Kar98a. Spandau is the rarest maker of the 98a with something like 12,000 made. It appears matching also which is hard to find. The buttstock has been altered or repaired also. Interesting to note the firing proof appears to be Erfurt rather than Spandau too. As for a value or what to do with it, I’d ask some of
our European members.

Yes, The buttstock has been cut and change... there is 3 big screws. It is not a very well made fix.
Thanks a lot for your help, Cj556 !!

Bonjour et bienvenue,
I’m French and it’s not illegal to keep this rifle. It is if you’re neither a hunter nor a sportshooter (if the rifle works, it falls into category C).
In terms of value, the action is rare, but it’s in bad condition and the average buyer doesn’t care unfortunately.
I advise you to find a gunsmith that will buy it for 100 EUR or so. Otherwise, you shall abandon it to the local Police or Gendarmerie.
