Hungarian 31M!

EOD - bombs and bullets
Happened to be perusing the Trader over on GB a week ago, and saw this posted by a member (both boards), and being full blooded Hungarian, with a penchant for Hungarian weapons, I jumped on, and so glad I did.

I have a Budapest M95 Stutzen and a Steyr long rifle still in 8x50R, a nice 35M, and a 98/40 (no 43M yet, but someday!) along with the 3 Femaru's (1 Hungarian military, 1 each from the two Luft contracts), so was thrilled to see this up for sale.

It is an actual 31M, not a 31a.M. And bonus it had the front sight hood (which really sold me on it, I am a sucker for sight hoods!). If my research is correct it is normal for the barrel serial not to match the receiver serial, since the barrels are new made, and serialed at time of conversion...

It seems these were converted from the 8x50R to the new Hungarian (the Hungarians adopted it first) 8x56R. New barrels were manufactured (in the case of the 31M, the 31a.M had cut down long rifle barrels, you can tell by the front sight which it is...) ad were marked with a large "H" (similar to the "S" mark on Austrian conversions). The Hungarian 31M's had a distinctive and unique front sight hood, which I understand are hard to find...

The stock is correct, has the K.A.B. mark, though it is somewhat faint. The serial on the buttplate matches neither serial on the metal. Not sure how normal that is, but, beggars can't be choosers with Hungarian weapons!

I haven't taken it apart to see of there are any other markings under the wood yet, but will. I noticed what appears to be a sideways "M" on the right receiver side, and an "E" on the barrel.

Anything else that stands out to anyone? Like I said, I was very happy to add it to my small Hungarian collection, its a really cool piece. Oh, and no import markings either...

I should get a family portrait of all my Hungarian guns....

The CZ on the buttplate probably means this weapon was in the property of the Csendőrség (Gendarmerie). Probably a property number rather than a SN since I can't say I've ever seen a 31M with a CZ (or CS) prefix on the rifle itself.

Nice add to the hungarian collection. Yours has a cross bolt and still has schritt rear sight. So many different variations of these inter war rifles.
Butt plate serials on all royal hungarian rifles are a bit of a mystery. As ryan said could be Csendorseg. I have seen a Cs prefix butt plate to though so who knows.

I think 'CZ' refers to something else, given the spelling of Csendörség.

Nice rifle OP, it looks alot like mine.

I figured you'd dig it Brother! You getting ready for Easter? Kolboz, sárgatúró, maybe a szalona sutes if its warm? I got the makings for a batch of Lecso this week, maybe some paprikas czirkes too! Oh, and definitely doing palacsinta one night too...

Thanks for the additional insights Ryan and Pat, always appreciated....

Though I thought the original schritt marked sights went to 2400 schritt, and the new meter marked sights went to 2000 (I think a schritt was like .75 meters?)

Surely not a lot known out there on Hungarian weapons, especially these inter-war guns.

I have some original WWII dated Hungarian 8x56R too to go with them...would never shoot it. Seems to be much harder to find than the usual Austrian stuff...

31m

Nice 31M find, especially like the front sight hood! BTW, ya'll are making me want to make a batch of lecso this morning, just like nagy-mama used to make. Jo napot!

Good, that was the plan! Keep the Hungarian cooking traditions alive! I had my grandmothers teach me various recipes while they were still here, and call my mom often to ask questions...but at this point its up to me to keep the traditions alive. Think I am making my batch of Lecso tonight... But I have a hankering for palacsinta too, maybe I'll do both. My son and the wife love the palacsinta...they are so-so on the lecso...I haven't done a batch of krumpli galuska in a while either, which was my all-time favorite food growing up, and the first thing I always asked my grandmother growing up when they came to visit or we went there...when are you making krumpli galuska?

Oh, and thanks for the compliment on the gun... I almost forgot what this thread was about!
