Help with GEW sling

Was going through some stuff and found this sling, looks like a military GEW 98 sling but not 100% sure, could it be for one of the pre-war commercial contract rifles? Was going to put it on the trader but wanted to make sure I describe it accurately. I did check it under UV light and no glow on the stitching.

Thanks!
Nick

I agree with Mike..it's a type 2.
What's the difference between a type 1 and type 2 Gewehr 98 sling? Did a Google search and came up empty handed. Also what would be the corrct time frame for both? I'm not even a noob so any info on Gewehr 98 slings including the canvas ones would be awesome too know!

Here's the easy guide.

Type 1s have the flap covering the metal button and removable quick detach. The adjustment buckle is sewn on.

Type 2s have a sewn on quick detach and a removable buckle with a football shaped stud.

My basic rule of thumb is that type 1s are pre-war, type 2s are wartime. As with anything though, there are exceptions and changes never magically occurred overnight.

The canvas slings were a wartime expedient and there is no hard and fast on when they showed up. They will always be type 2 style, but there is quite a bit of variability on what they look like in terms of specific material and quality of workmanship. Here's is one on one of my late war rifles. This one is quite nice and fairly sturdy. I have another on a 1917 JPS, that is downright crude.

By any chance you could take a few more detailed pictures of that wartme expedient canvas sling and maybe toss a ruler next to it. I’m curious what the other side of the leather tab looks like. I’m thinking of making a reproduction since I think I have some webbing that may work. Thanks in advance.

Here's a couple of pics of mine. Sorry, no ruler.
Thanks Peter--- you can see the differences between ours-- these were pretty varied between makers-- hatrick, I would suggest if you make a repro not to get too bogged down in what is "right"-- there's enough variation that you shouldn't worry. See below for another variant I own that is totally different. This used no leather at all:

This is perfect! Thanks so much. I’ll try not to overthink it… LOL

The key detail I needed was the leather tab for the slider with the football button. Looks like a single long piece on the side with the button cutout and a short half piece reinforcing the other side.
