I recently purchased this rifle and I am looking for some information. It says 147 and has a * I can find info on s/147 what is the difference if any between them? Also I can't find any info on what the * means. Also if I am not breaking any rules if anyone has a rough value of it. I don't want to sell it but I would like to know. I don't sell guns but sometimes I trade and would like to know what I have. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Unfortunately it is a Mitchell's Mauser, I wouldn't pay more than $300 for one of those. I've been told they make fine shooters if that's what you want.

The * used to be an X, as applied by the Russians to the rifle after ww2. It was a Russian capture and then Don Mitchell's outfit applied an extra line to make the * to distance the rifle from Russian captures I suppose.

147 code 98k

Rifle was made by JP sauer und Sohn in Suhl in 1940. not a collector piece but should be a good shooter!

Yep another piece of history that fell into the hands of MM. Although not of value to most collectors some of the parts could be. I got a MM in trade a few years ago. Was in sad shape. It still had all of the war eagles on it, no electro pencil serial numbers added for the RC forced match you see on a lot of RCs. The stock was BAD, thick Russian red shellac all over it and peeling. A crack running from in front of the mag well to the wrist, two dowels and three patches of laminated wood to repair other damage. The only thing that matched on the rifle was the receiver and barrel. I would not shoot it because of the internal crack. I ended up selling every part of that rifle except the receiver, barrel, and rear band. The stock became a front end donor for a bad duffle cut. The pimp shined bolt went to a guy who needed a bolt for a sporter. Etc.
I would not give $100 for a Mitchell`s Mauser but some of the parts can be worth more.

You have a Mitchell's Mauser. They are refurbished Russian Capture rifles that were marketed alongside the viagra and pajamagrams in the back of Guns & Ammo magazine. MMs have zero collector value but can be (ab)used as a shooter in good conscience. Enjoy it for what it is or sell the parts.

*Mitchell's Mausers always remind me of this classic: https://youtu.be/vmNZwJTp9nM

I learned something new. So thank you op and to the members.

Mitchells mausers dont really appeal to me either but for the right price i wouldnt say no.

I started seeing that asterick on rifles with the "in the white" bolts. (Mitchells)

They smelled like rc's to me.

I dont get how people dick with these rifles so much and are still able to sleep at night.

Oh, an MM would make an excellent candidate for a sniper clone.

Oh they covered that too. Several flavors of fake snippers, all 100% of course. :googlie

And as far as the sleeping part, one of our members put it succinctly. "Very well"

I remember once in something put out by Mitchell's that the added line asterisk was a German proof mark or maybe an acceptance mark. I wonder if that Mitchell's guy was ever in politics.

Whatever happened to his plan to start re-manufacturing K98's..?

Anybody remember that..?

Was about 6 or 7 year ago..maybe more...there was even a small article in American Rifle man I think.

Guess he finally ran out of access to the hidden caches in Europe.

Cant remember his price point but apparently the plan didnt work out as I havent seen a single add since.

Man O' Man were these deceptive for the Mauser newb and I'm sure that was the bastards intention.

I'll be honest and fess up. He almost got me many years ago. Luckily a friend of mine mentioned what they actually were. If you are a noob it seems like some kind of miracle. Ooooh, a hidden cache just back from Europe.

You've got that right. I remember drooling all over those ads. Remember the one the ad that offered "your very own copy of Enemy at the Gates" with the purchase of a Genuine Sniper? That was a good one!

That was a classic. That marketing ploy was in the same, ahem, high quality realm as the old sales pitch: "As seen on TV" lol

Ol' Mitch is lucky the peak of his career was in the era before the internet and gun forums really took off. No way he could pull off that crap as easily today with collecting information so much more readily available and shared.

There was a particular turd with 3 then 2 fools bid warring like crazy that we were following on your site. It had several issues and quite a few false statements and made up fluff. Short answer is I used 5 quite different search phrases and that rifle and it's discussion turned up each time. It 'sold' for close to $4k which was probably at least 3 times what it was really worth. Those 'bidders' all showed apparently zero interest in doing the slightest bid of research so...
