This is a EL 24A marked single shot unit ...markings: ERMA emblem over chamber, Erma Werke Munchen -Dachau Made in Germany, then next line: Cal 22 Long rifle Model 24a Nr C 1478.
The unit does not fit in a K98 and the firing pin release is similar to what I remember my old 1896 Swedish Mauser bolt looked like. unit slides into a 7'63 Argentine 1891 Mauser but will not go pass the lock and firing pin release is different. Thanks for any help. I am getting together some conversion units to sell. A k98 single shot , K98 with mag well and 2 magazines, a M20 Walther Lothar 4mm / 8x57 unit , a steel insert to shoot 32 ACP from 8x57- and whatever this turns out to be-also a few Luger conversion units.
The pics show it next to a K98 unit for comparison, K98 is on the bottom and on the left

According to the Erma book (which is soon to be published in English too, even extended) there were also patent drawings for the EL24 to the Swiss 1911 Rifle as well as for the British Enfield rifle. Maybe either of the two is worth a try? I suppose you also know there was a EL24 variant for the Austrian M.95 short rifle? Maybe also post some more pictures, I can ask the author, I'm sure he'd love to get in touch with you.

Thanks, rely on a fellow leatherneck to come through ;)

Not sure how to understand this? Am I'm supposed to get to see additional pictures of the EL24 in question? Will you check with the two rifles I mentioned?

That was an honest thank you for a helpful response. I looked at both of the straight pull Swiss and Austrian rifles online and think that this unit must fit a rotating bolt action.. I'll try to take more pics tonight however I am packing for a road trip and it might slip my 73 yr old brain housing group;)

Actually no. The Erma EL24 converted these straight pull weapons to normal rotating bolt action rifles. There is a recent video on the Erma EL24 in a M.95 rifle posted at youtube:

Sorry for having had asked. English is not my mother language so I maybe didn't fully get it. Looking forward to additional pictures!

Thanks again, Ian always has great info. The one depicted is different than my 30 caliber unit both the mounting system and the sear catch are different. I'll look into the Swiss rifle which is 7,5 and may have a different sear.

Sure, but please do take the additional pictures. It could well also be for the SMLE since those are 7.7 mm caliber.

@Coyote were you able to check?
I just got back from colorado, I was able to verify that it is not compatible with eitherthe Steyr or the Swiss K-31 still looking at the 1896 Swedish Mauser as the most likely fit however the English script kinda leads towards a Brit or USA rifle. text 409-497-6556 for more detailed photos than this site allows due to bit size

Sent you a PM with my e-mail address, send me the pictures via mail and I'll look at them and upload those for you.

Attached the pictures posted for @Coyote . To have it mentioned, the "odd caliber EL24" is the bottom one in these pictures. Especially note how different the chamber portion of it is, when comparing with the 8x57 chamber.

After having corresponded with the author of the Erma book he got back to me today and told me that it was made in the 1950s. Also he said certain specific EL24 variants were sold to Sweden and Egypt. For proper identification you should:
1. measure the chamber portion from the direction of the barrel, to find out the caliber length to know in which caliber rifle it was used
2. try to see if it would fit a Swedish Mauser, a Nagant rifle or a K98k adopted to .308 or a 8.15x46R Wehrmann rifle

I'll try the Swedish Mauser, the firing pin release does not match K98 and looks like the M96 ....the Nagant might also be correct I have never owned one and not familiar with the bolt firing design. Great information thanks for your time and effort on my behalf.

@Coyote , did you measure the length chamber portion? If yes, please do let us know. I've attached a picture where I marked the dimensions that would be of help - so three times diameter and one time length. You could tell those in inch or milimeter, whatever is easier for you.EL24-dims.jpg

The + means slightly over, poor at Vernier scales
length= 4.7 cm 1) dia=1.1+ 2)dia= 1.1cm 3) dia .8 cm 4) dia=.72 cm
body is 3.4+cm and neck is 1.2+ cm
