Hello from California!

Hello. I live in California. I served in the army reserves in a military police company. I went on one deployment to Iraq in 2007-2008. My unit was stationed in Tikrit but my platoon was stationed outside of that city between three towns on a patrol base inside an Iraqi Army base. I'm currently out of the military. My favorite periods of history to study are the Roman Empire and World War 2. I love following the English Premiere League. My favorite teams are Chelsea and Southampton. I also enjoy travel and adventure. I traveled with my Dad when i was a kid from California to New York when my Dad drove long haul trucking. I hope to travel to Europe someday and attend a live soccer game and visit all the museums. I have always loved milsurp firearms. I bought an M1 Garand before i even got my drivers license! I'm just starting to get back into collecting again and bought a K98 660 RC last year. This year i bought a K98 BYF 45. I really like the K98. Hope to learn a lot on these forums!

Hi. Thank you both for the welcome. Yeah, its very unfortunate and embarrassing how bad California is about respecting its citizens rights and how much they love to tax us. The state shows no love for the military even though we have a lot of bases in California. My home unit was in Irvine and they can't wait to destroy the base to build more stores.

Welcome, from another Californian. You referenced the base in Irvine. Some of my best memories are of the El Toro air base. We would watch Phantom Jets practice landings from a friends back yard. The El Toro Air Show was really great. They put on a great show, great display and would be great host. I went to allot. The Tustin Helicopter base was also very impressive and made for a lot of fly byes. We could all identify the type of eggbeater by the sound. It was next to one of the great Drag Strips, Orange County International Raceway. (OCIR). I miss the Marines being around, they were great to have a neighbors. I hope to see some posting of your 98ks and any other related items. This site is where the knowledge is. Thank you for your service.

Welcome from another Commiefornian and short timer.. AZ first then who knows! Like noodle I miss the Marines around El Toro having worked next to both the base and Tustin Helios... Looking forward to further posts and get the Mauser books by Farb if you haven't already...

I didn't mention but I also a Cali-commie currently. Stationed at Beale AFB. I'm originally from KS and very happy to be PCSing to TX in two weeks.

Awesome and God's speed... Thank you for your service... WW2 guns aren't affected too badly by the commie laws out here but everything else is... Enjoy Texas! Remember the Alamo if you're still in when you have to fly sorties after the commie calleys try and break away...

Sounds like New Jersey!

Welcome to the forum and I hope you'll find some interesting discussions here. What did you think of Iraq in general? Climate, food, people? Just wondering.

Thanks for the welcome. When I was small I saw some air shows there too. They used those giant hangers i heard for the movie Pearl Harbor, with added CGI of course. Its a shame they are building up all around there. Don't we have enough shopping centers everywhere?! Guess Irvine can't resist that sales tax income. When i get some free time i will take some pictures of my BYF 45. Really cool late war rifle that I picked up this year. I just ordered the K98 books to learn more information about these nice rifles too. :welcome:

Same here and agree on the shame factor with Tustin and El Toro.. Looking forward to seeing your BYF45! You'll love the books!! My first rifle was an all matching BNZ4 I picked up in 76 and I learned a ton from Volume 3...

Hi. I think Iraq can succeed. A lot better chance than Afghanistan. Iraq has oil, so at least they can build an economy around that. The country really lacks strong leadership on a national level. Most people think only on a local level. They are concerned more about their towns and local news and events. So it will take time to stabilize as a whole. But the country has a future. It is mostly desert where temperatures can get up to around 115 degrees. The only good thing is its a dry heat. No humidity. But still hot. Kuwait, which is to the south actually gets way hotter. Typically 10 degrees hotter. Which at that point makes it very hard to function. They do get light rain too. But sand storms are a problem. Hard to see anything when they come. But eventually it passes. The food is good. But takes your stomach awhile to get use to. So best not to eat their meals too much. When they offer you food or anything they don't like to take no for an answer. It is almost an insult to them if you refuse their hospitality. They eat pita bread with sauces and meat. Most of the people are nice. The people who know English will ask to see pictures of your girlfriend and ask you what kind of car you drive back home. They also will share fruit from their gardens. While on mission the kids will get you soda or anything for American money. Its a male dominant society so the woman won't ever talk to you but they did wave from inside their houses. Of course you have to always be on your guard and be alert when dealing with the people. Not everyone wants you there and they do get insurgents from other countries come in who want to attack you. But we figured its best they attacked armed Americans overseas than plotting an attack on home soil.

Nice description of what you saw over there. Thanks for your service and good luck searching for that next k98.
