Have a rust problem...

Hey there, this is not on a k98 bayo but wanted to pick the minds of the experts here

Have an old socket bayonet of some kind that had a light dusting of surface rust. I oiled the blade and put it back in the leather scabbard. Took it out today and the rust has bee getting much worse and started to pit the metal.

What do I soak the blade in to stop the rust?

Thanks

Kroil. Then maybe some bronze wool with ballistol. What Andy said. Rust grows if given moisture in any form and leather will hold moisture.

What's your process there, soak it in kroil for a bit then the oil and bronze/brass wool?

Soak it in Kroil and then brush it with a nylon brush and see what happens. You don't want to do anything that is going to shine the metal. The point is to remove active rust. Rust "grows" under moist conditions, including humidity in the air. The environment is the first thing to control because if this is how it is after 70 years of bad storage, not much will change in 70 years of proper storage. Do as little as necessary, but it is a firearm and its original condition was not rusty and deteriorating.

Like they all said, problem is you don't want to destroy the original finish on the metal. Moisture and oxygen causes the oxidation of the metal. You have to get the last bit or it will start up again. Vinegar on a q-tip works well at removing rust, but it will remove bluing as well. Lay the moisten q-tip you want to clean. then oil. Kroil is good, so is WD-40. The best thing to do is to keep them is a dry space and well oiled.

Rust removal

I watched someone remove active surface rust with an eraser today. Rub the eraser on small sections at a time and then wipe down with oil. I just saw the technique today and I am going to watch to see what happens.
