Has period repairs indicating it probably was rebuilt as a sniper rifle during the war.

Is that a scope you have in your pocket?

Just wanted to warn those who may not be up to speed on German Sniper rifles but are looking to buy one for their collection .
This Single Claws has ISSUES . The seller is saying It is Legit because (it has period repair indicating it was rebuilt into a sniper during the war) this is pure BS sales tactic .

This example IMHO is a good learning platform for those who need and want to learn how to tell an Original SC from one with ISSUES !!!!!!!!!

Steyr Arms Model 98 (Mauser K98) Sniper - 8mm - Featured in Book

This rifle has been at my local store for about a year now. The scope and bases are original and matching. Beyond that, the rifle is a mess. Even the barrel has been replaced.

Well, if the scope is respectable then maybe Peter could talk them down in price. He needs a scope. I can’t see much from the photos on my phone, but it looks like scope could be OK. Maybe get better photos to make sure.

That was my original thought. The scope and rings are original and worth a good amount. But they won’t come down on price at all. It’s a consignment rifle.

One interesting thing to note is that this exact rifle is photographed on "The german sniper" book , that was published in the 80ies , so this assembly was made at least 40 years ago : maybe this was really made during the war from a field armourer , or not ?

No chance. I got to see the guys while collection. It was obvious he was using the same dies to stamp several different rifles. The numbers on this SC’s bolt was the same numbers used on a LSR scope mount. His collection was an absolute mess.

thx for the tip, there have been a couple on GB from that collection i was curious about, but the couple i knew were bad has kept my interest down on anything from this batch

Technically it looks like two rifles turned into one. One is the receiver with the original bases and its matching scope with rings, the other one being a Standard Modell where several parts were force matched to the sniper action. Really odd it is this way, but there are worse things to own (well, not at the asking price though). Were it mine, I'd pull all Standard Modell parts and keep the original sniper receiver with the scope and scope rings atop as a nice display piece.
