Gunshow find M35 or M40

Just picked this helmet up at a gun show, everything looks good to me just want to run it by some guys who know more. I can’t tell if it’s a M35 or M40 due to the paint making it hard to see the vent. Would it be alright to treat the leather with some conditioner?

I can`t say anything about the helmet, not my area but, I can tell you it would be best to just leave the liner as it is. Anything you put on that leather will have adverse effects at this point. Most leather treatments will darken the leather. Some treatments might make it softer and more pliable, but the drawback is the cells in the leather break down and leather will deteriorate faster. If the leather has dry rot, there is not much you can do, other than
keeping the helmet/liner in a controlled environment ( low humidity, no extreme heat) is idea. Others here may have more to say on this subject.

Appreciate the information that’s what I assumed it’s a shame nothing can be done for leather.

The helmet has a lot of paint on it. To be sure about the vent/rivet, look at it from the inside.

Luftwaffe overpaint and named. Don't do anything to it, leave it as it is and store it in a climate and humidity controlled environment.

After looking inside at the air vent, looks to be a M35. Thinking its a barn find with all the cobwebs and dust in it even a couple dead bugs.
