For the reference thread. Here are markings found on muzzle covers. These are the only three I have, would be great if others could contribute photos of their examples.

Another Vollmer lid, this one marked with the company logo on the inside. And an article on Vollmer, thanks to Paul.

I stuck the tread up top, maybe Cyrus can add a list on his first post once we get enough of a foundation for one. I have a good number of examples to add and will do so ASAP (though not quickly!); there are probably a dozen well documented, some relatively well-known machinist firms, some with only acceptance which are possibly arsenals, but it will be good to get these organized in one place to try and unravel this "mystery"!

Here are my 2 WW1 muzzle covers . The one on the left seems to be for a smaller caliber, like 22. The larger one is 8 MM. Both have marking's. I think crown B. Maybe Bavaria ?. The 22MM is Brass. the 8 MM is steel.

Cyrus, great idea-- here are some of the ones I have: I tried to run the gamut of diversity of markings and finish-- the green painted one is off my 18 DWM and the chrome one came off an earlier WMO. The rest are blued or worn finish.

Here's an interesting Gew98 muzzle cover, previously Kaiserliche-Marine, II. MatrosenArtillerie-Abteilung 100 (lined out). The lid exhibits a Weimar naval marking, Nordsee 1548. Two inspection marks are visible, the spring has a "U" that's faint & won't photograph with my phone.

Here is some lids I once owned, most were traded to PeterK for a rifle 10+ years ago, the mfg ones I will start with. Here is Samsonwerke, a fairly rare example (5 recorded)

J&S (under lid); Wolfgang has a G.G./Z (C/B acceptance) similarly applied.

It is not identified yet, only this example noted, but I suspect a commercial lid, perhaps applied to an arsenal MC? It seems probable most pre-war MC are arsenals, though Storz lists a few mfg, Franz Stock, R. Stock are also mentioned by collectors. W. KOBER & Co Suhl is fairly common too (typically under the bridge, this is often confused with WKC, but is not correct.

Simson are common and desirable. some unit marked, S30 with C/O (S28 like) are also known in some number, I assume S30 is a mfg, possibly connected to WMO (Oberspree, Karlsruhl?)

Most seem unidentified by a obvious means, typically little more than a letter (H is common, though stylized) but more typical is crowned letters in acceptance pattern, C/B and C/N seem most common. Naturally most examples recorded (by me) show a limited number of angles so a set of initials or trademark could be present but not photographed..
