From emails with Jon Speed, here is a number of photographs and documents pertaining to the extended magazine development in the Gewehr 98. Of particular interest, if you look at the glass plate negative (No. 3) it has a flat tangent rear sight.

Jon, the last pic of the real mag - what is the thing on the right? is this the inlay to the mag on the left?

The item in the right is the vertical feed magazine developed for the IG71.
