I bought this from Sam last year when he upgraded. I was very glad to get it, I’ve been on a bit of a Bavarian kick lately.
This was a dufflecut with a lost fore end. Sam found a walnut good replacement, but I wanted to get a beech one. I decided against trying to find an original stock to splice for it—the stock is so nice it would be a shame to cut another so pristine—so I opted for a new made piece. After fitting it I was able to match it pretty closely in color. Not perfect, never will be, but I’m happy with it.
The Gew itself is gorgeous with strong deep bluing. The beech stock feels robust and has a nice red hue to it. The stamps are super crisp. Interestingly the bolt is from another Amberg 1917, only thirteen serial numbers away. It matches except for the missing parts and the floorplate and follower. Nothing surprising acceptance wish, typical Amberg c/J and c/G throughout. (I was running a fever when i took these and didn't feel like taking it apart, i'll update this when i do get a chance to break it down.)
