Gew98m SPANDAU |1916

Have been meaning to post this Gew98M for some time. Finally got my hands on it so took photos. Rifle was acquired in the latter 1980s from a collector acquaintance whom had a Gshop in Fresno, Ca. Unfortunately, cannot recall his name but a few years later he was killed in a shootout with some punk kid attempting to rob him at his store. He went "with his boots on" as it were, the wounded perp turned up at a local hospital with his mommy and the cops took it from there. So, whenever taking this rifle in hand, I reflect on his sacrifice those many years ago. However I digress... I had a lesser condition G98M at the time with a Polish, 2-piece matching stock. When this example came along, traded off the former. Everything seems to be matching except the bolt release (#765). Will let the photos do the rest of the talking (remaining photos post #2)...

Think I had two previous G98Ms before the one pictured. Collecting is definitely a continual "work in progress". A humorous (at least to me) sidebar to the purchase was a good friend of mine had known and visited the owner when he resided in Las Vegas before relocating to Cali. While there he saw several items he liked. Though NFS, the guy allowed him to attach a small hanging tag to some collectibles my friend wanted, in the hope he would be contacted should the guy decide to sell any. So, when I picked up the pictured rifle, found such a tag with his name on it. Knowing my friend quite well, his expertise and with his name on the tag, it was as if the rifle had already been certified! A day or two later he just happened to call me and inquired about the show. I filled him in and mentioned the rifle with this funny name tag on it. After several seconds of silence he told me the story of the time he visited the owner, how this came about and took it in stride. Turned out he was to be the recipient of my former G98M, so got something for himself as well...
