Gew98b rifles , are these rare ?

Hi there, no pictures as of yet, but come across an advertised Danzig G98b , and also a Suhl G98b. Both have the K98 rear sights and straight bolt handles. The Amberg has S42 stamped, and the Suhl has 1920 added
Question, are these considered rare in comparison to non-converted G98's, and if so are there desirable makers / dates etc.
Thanks a lot !

These are actually Gewehr 98Ms, modified Gewehr 98s that ended up in use with the Weimar Republic. A lot of the Gewehr 98s retained by the Reichswehr and the others stashed away in Germany would eventually get modified with a tangent rear sight and a wide rear band along with general reworking and would make for rather long lived service rifles considering their WWI origins. Due to the fact most of these rifles are reworks of some form or another, there is a ton of variation in Gew98Ms that you can read up on in the Republic mauser section. I'm guessing the Amberg has the S/42 on the rear sight, indicating it was a spare part supplied from Mauser Oberndorf from 1936-1938 and was probably modified around that time. The 1920 on the Suhl is a government property stamp indicating the Suhl stuck around in service with the Weimar Republic. Gew98Ms are not exactly rare but fully matching ones are quite uncommon, and given how uncommon Suhl Gewehr 98s are, a fully matching Suhl Gew98M would be a desirable rifle provided original condition. Though matching on a Gewehr 98M doesn't mean factory original, more like depot original (similar to refurb'd M91/30 Mosin-Nagants). Pictures would be appreciated!

Thanks for your information.

Definitely 98Ms. It's a collector term, but AN94 has the right of it. Not super common in matching or mostly matching shape. Matching bolt is always a big plus. They don't carry much of a premium price regardless of rarity.

AN94 and Chris covered it well…. 98m’s are cool rifles in their own right. I really like good matching ones, especially ones with Nazi era depot stock marks
