Gew98 Sniper ID

BTW: the rings on your OIGEE scope were made by HWZ = Hermann Weihrauch Zella-Mehlis. Well known for WWI mounts and the WWII Short Side Rail mount.

The bolt being swept back is a mystery. Would there be any way to determine if a rifle was reworked during the war (say for repair, replace parts especially the fragile scopes) and sent back out for service? It seems to me whomever angled the bolt back also modified the cutout slightly, but the cutout is correct if I understand your post.

also modified the cutout slightly,
Maybe I'm getting old and blind, but I can not make out any modification to the cutout. ??? Can you please point out.
Interestingly I found a photo showing a Danzig 1917 rifle with Voigtländer bases that show a similarily swept back bolt.

That's fascinating, and unless my eyes are failing me(entirely possible) I seem to notice a similar, albeit more dramatic in your photo, angle on the cut out. The one I refer to on my rifle is more of a step, but could be nothing more than an oversight on my end. Let me pull up the picture and try to add it below.

I don’t see anything modified in the stock. Does the bolt have a mark at the bend in the rear? All sniper bolts I have seen were marked by the bender. As it is a mismatch, might just be a bolt someone bent https://www.k98kforum.com/attachments/17-jpg.291123/

I don't like the screws in the rear base, and I don't like the single screw in the front base. Either the bases once were removed from the rifle and reinstalled by someone unskilled, or they were not original to the rifle. And actually I'm surprised that @Amberg did not comment on this at all.

Thanks for your input. I wouldn't be surprised if the bases were removed at least once and reinstalled, from what I've read German gunsmith were top class at torquing and aligning the screws all in perfect symmetry. I believe your point being, what is correct to see would be all the slots in the screws pointing vertically, and all screws flush to the surface ?

I would also like to seek the expertise of the many on this forum regarding the acquisition of a Rathenow scope. Ideally I would like to deal with a member if any are willing to sell and have something perhaps in the cc letter block, that would be fantastic. Alternatively, I do see an option pointed out to me graciously by another member. And also one for sale on a German militaria site that I would need authenticated by experts here:

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Checking your pictures again I wonder if maybe the rear base has been milled off in the portion where the screw heads are located, making it lower than the portion where the claws go into. That though is tough to impossible to tell from your pictures. Please use natural light and without flash, best is a cloudy day. And make the pictures from straight perspectives, so exactly top down to receiver, from left and from right side of the receiver.

Re your question, I would not start with buying a scope. Finding the rings correct to the bases as well as to the scope will be impossible. I'd rather wait for a correct scope with correct rings to turn up. Might sound to take longer, but overall you will get faster to the target of recompleting the rifle.
