GEW SS Rework

Southwest

I came upon this rifle and even though it does not fit into my collecting interest I purchased it anyway. A member of a Vets family sold this k98 and an old double barrel rifle/shotgun combo to a local dealer. Supposed to have been bring back guns. The dealer "cleaned" the k98. The other was left as found and I did look at both.

All of the internal and external metal parts of the barreled action match. Trigger guard, floor plate, etc.. The bolt looks like a k98a bolt and matches itself.

The stock, upper hanguard, butt plate, bands and bolts that hold the action to the stock are all numbered and match. The stock does not appear to be correct for a SS rework rifle. It has been duffle cut.

I would greatly appreciate to have from some of the many experts here. If there are any further information I can provide, please ask.

Regards, Al

SS Rifle

Al,

It looks like it could be possibly correct. Is the receiver scrubbed? I can not tell from the photo. Also, is there a death head in the grip area of stock? I like the Eagle N markings on the rifle metal and the markings associated with them. The Death Head on the barrel looks correct. More and better pictures would help, but I would say you are possibly on to something here. In order to be more sure you would need to provide additional pictures that are of good quality. Most of the numbers match on my rework, but not some of the small parts and my bolt does not match either. Thanks.

I will get better pics. My problem is that I had to go to San Diego suddenly today to help my friend's wife. He is under Hospice care but she needed help until her daughter can get here. The gun is in my safe in Tucson.

I will be home on Tuesday and will try to improve the pics.

The receiver is scrubbed. I had doubts about the front sight having the hood slot until I located the 88 serial number on the sight blade.

My expertise on these guns is -0.10 %!

I am into snipers.

i think you have a really crap rifle.... so you should sell it to me cheap... hahaha but if you want to unload it PM me and ill take it off your hands! :D

from the limited photos it looks like a Simson receiver either a leftover or recycled type Marked Gew98 . With a commercial marked barrel with correct SS/DH marking. E/N fir tree is Zella Mellis commercial proofing. So far you have all of our attention.

Very interesting rifle, congrats on finding this one! The wartime commercial rifles are fascinating part of the K98k collecting world. Can't wait to see what better photos will reveal...

My collecting partner is going to take better pics Friday and post them.
I probably will not be home for another week.

I have come to the conclusion that I have an original matching SS barreled action that somebody put into a GEW stock. The k98a bolt that came with it is likely not correct also. My plan is to try to find a stock, bands and bolt that would be somewhat correct. Try to get as close as I can to a good representation for my collection.

What new photos would be helpful for further identification?

Regards, Al

I have been trying to place a value for the the rifle in it's present configuration without success. Anyone have an idea of a place to
look for comparisons to find a realistic value?

Resurrecting an old thread.

The Gew stock doesn't fit the profile I have seen on others, I do not believe it is the correct stock. We still have the stock just in case, but it is a mismatch to this rifle. No provision has been made in the Gew stock besides length (and it's duffel cut so who knows) to make it in any kind of K98k configuration (band slot, takedown disc, etc.) Now, I don't own Vol. I yet so I may be making a fool of myself here!

Here are some more pics.We found a better stock and bands. Looks a lot better in this Mauser stock just until we figure out if the other one is legit. Essentially still just a barreled action with matching TG/FP, follower.

Any stabs at value? Not selling at all, I am just not in touch with the market at all and want to value it for insurance, I am playing catch up after a break from collecting.

Jeff

The stock it came in - note the green pencil in the channel? It looks like a stylized "SS" one on top of the other. What connection to reality that has I have no idea.

No finger grooves.
