Picked up two nickel plated Gew.98 muzzle covers this past weekend at the AGCA show in Hoover, AL. The blued example (MC1) I purchased from a page member a couple of years ago.

These never bore me; the diversity of acceptance and various trademarks is pretty staggering. I've got close to 100 of these Gew 98 lids and I'm still convinced I don't have every variation.

Thanks for posting!

Chris, are you aware of any references for the various muzzle cover markings either book or website? I have Storz but it doesn't mention markings for the covers.

Storz mentions that Danzig made a substantial number of these for the Prussians. I've always assumed the ones without trademarks to come from them.

That being said, private contractors were also heavily used. Some are easily deciphered (Samsonwerke, Bülow, etc), others not so much.

These were mechanically not easy to manufacture and relatively expensive; and one point during the war, there was even a trial of a substitute muzzle cover made from cloth or heavy paper..I've only seen the drawings in Storz, never a surviving one.

I would also recommend Weaver's trademark book, some of the small obscure makers aren't in there but it will give you a good idea for the logos of the major ones. At $50, It's a cheap resource to have on hand.
