German WWII Sniper Patch

This is an interesting topic.. Brian posted one of these a few years back and there was spirted discussion then. My head was clearer then and I think there was a many page discussion on WAF at a similar time on these patches. One thing is certain. This patch and the jager patch are similar and made a similar way.. Also the mountain troop patch was made in huge quantities.. There are at least three maybe more variations of the Gebirgs sleeve patch.. Wool EM bevo EM and Officers wool and bullion. I would have to say with any of these patches its possible for this process to be followed.. Once designed and approved a patch would be given a production run. These are machine made not custom one off items.. Large spools would be made to think they would be made any different is just foolish.. Im sure some were tunic removed and then some found in factories and depots ect. Which one is the real type at this point is anyone's guess ?? Is there a photo anywhere of one of these being worn ? When making anything these factories were paid by piece count. Awards ect. weren't made by the amount handed out they were made by factory orders and there was always surplus.

My thoughts..
Yes. I have the patches you discuss and agree. Do you know or have the link to the discussion at Wehrmacht Awards?

I have posted my patch before, but have gained additional info. from a couple of new collector friends. There are many who collect this stuff who don’t participate in forums.

Brian.. I wasn't aware it was the same patch. I may have pointed it out in your last post which was a few years ago I think ? I just assumed it was a different patch that you posted.
The WAF thread was long and interesting and worth reading. Lots of shady things going on per usual. The weitze item is probably fake also as they have no issue selling fakes . There was just a post in the dagger section or KM section of a fake KM dagger with brilliants that's been outed..

Maybe search there under "sniper patch" I cant recall which sub section it was posted under.

OK. Thanks. The other new patch like mine is my friends patch.

The attached badge belonged to a friend of mine. I do not know if original or not. He said it was cut from a vest and border was later colored with a felt pen.

Looks like possibly real. That happens. I wish those kinds of things did not happen.

Here’s another of my friends patches that came from a vet. A real patch in my opinion that someone removed the excess material.

Hercules, here is a Jäger EM M44 tunic that shows not only the Jäger bevo badge but also the 1st stage Scharfschützenabzeichen.
Provenance is high on this tunic as it belongs to the Bob Hritz collection.

Thanks. I’ve been told that style is real. I don’t personally know of anyone who got it as a bring back. Knowable people have confirmed it though. I don’t know Bob. Where is his collection located? Thanks for the photos.

No problem Hercules, I came across that tunic while researching for another topic.
Regarding Bob Hritz, he is a well known SS-collector:

Very interesting subject . The only issue I have with patches is the price , some sell for as much as an SS SSR Scope & Mount and authenticating them is so hard to do . IMHO I will stick to what I know sniper rifles , scopes and mounts . Cloth is a mine field I never wanted step into . Those that do are much braver collector than I am , as I said very interesting and desirable collecting field just not my cup of tea . those that do collect them have my admeration .

You just need one Dave. Would go good with your rifles. That’s not much to risk really.

Plus when you go to sell everyone is going to want to buy the sniper patch from the famous German Sniper Collector Dave Roberts. How could you loose? I’ll even help you pick it out and spend your money.
Thats exactly what I said to myself when I first started collecting German Sniper Rifle . I only want one just a Single Claw that ended very badly . Its like when someone offers You their Wise Potato Chips , sure but just one and before you know it you ate half the person bag of Potato Chips . I will use the Nancy Reagan adage and just Say No !!!!!!!!!!!! :giggle::giggle:

This seems to be an authentic sniper award document for the badge in 1st stage.
Issued by the 329th Infantry Division also known as Hammer-Division.

Thank you Absolut for pointing this out!
There is another document, this is related to a Skijäger who participated successfully in the Sniper course apparently.
How is you feeling about that one?

Jesus, these Americans really love faking, the problem is that they make up such fancy papers instead of staying plain as the Germans did ...

Edit: still couldn't stop laughing on that oversize Eagle with the scoped rifle in his claws covering half of that page. Did someone really thought this would be a good idea?

Absolut, I'm no expert on paper items but during my research I encountered a few front made leaflets, award documents or division-newspapers.
It seems that there was a tradition using an artistically able solider from the division doing these kinds of hand drawn celebration papers next to the official documents.
