German(?) M35 Helmet Identification

Hey howdy folks,

I recently got gifted an M35 helmet by a family member. Apparently my great grandfather was in the US Army as an engineer in Europe during WW2 and brought the helmet back.

The helmet itself is pretty rusty and worn, and has no liner. I did some research myself and was able to determine only that it was an M35 pattern, but nothing else. No insignia left, and of the two stamps on the interior, one is incredibly worn.

The factory mark looks to be "E 62" and what I presume is the lot number is too worn to see beyond what also looks like it contains "62." I couldn't find any references to a factory that just stamped "E" so that's a bit of an enigma to me.

Was wondering if anyone had any insight into it at all. Thanks in advanceIMG_20250405_200457_960.jpgIMG_20250405_200506_526.jpgIMG_20250405_200538_653.jpgIMG_20250405_200525_557.jpgIMG_20250405_200641_828.jpgIMG_20250405_200700_026.jpg

The stamps appear to be NS62 (factory and metric size) and E62 (lot number). I suspect it was originally a DD Army helmet from the factory in the mid 30s but was reissued later with textured green gray paint to the exterior and inside rim. Some time later it was sprayed in the typical 3 color camo scheme; tan, red-brown and green. Probably camoed en masse with spray equipment in the field. Very nice!

Very nice indeed! Thank you for the help - I don't think I ever would've figured the factory/size mark as that.

NS stands for 'Nickel Werke Schwerte'. This company in the town of Schwerte made helmets in WWI, WWII and during the postwar years.

this is a m35 shell that was re-worked later and the rough paint was added. Then a nice spray camo was added in the tricolor camo used later in the war..

Nice gift !
