G41w 43

Kelly, I think he’s referring to this rifle.

Oh, okay. I see what was being referenced to now. Hmmmm, don't know if that's "American" specifically or if German cursive was the same....or what? Just odd that both rifles were pretty close to each other and having this "scratched" or "e penciled" done to them.

Thanks Tiger 2 and Fly and everyone for all the info and ideas bein posted.
Im not an expert, just a long time collector and have been wrong on a few other things like I’m sure others have been and that’s why I posted these pics as detailed as I could because I have always believed the engraving to be period applied and when viewing the rifle in person it’s easier to tell than the pics show.
I had an early G43 and the font on the pencil, the depth and patina was pretty much the same.
It was not until I located collector information on line and in the collectors book on the subject that determining the approximate end of walther production was possible. After gettin that info, I was really thinkin the change to engraving being done was for the same reasons it was starting to be done with the G43.
.......
Until your post I had only seen a couple others with engraving but only on the rear of the receiver.
A comparison of other G41’s like this would be great and with your theory from knowing the other rifles that are engraved bein late examples also really seems to be a possibility.

Thanks everyone for pushin this forward. Great stuff!

We’re all wrong from time to time that’s how we learn! I’ve been hardcore into Mausers since I was 12, only fairly recently I’ve become very interested in G41’s, so I’ve got a lot of learning to do! Your rifle is very interesting for me to compare being such a late one, I’ve got one on the opposite end of the spectrum, a two digit 1943 so the small detail changes are neat to look at, thanks for the photo spread!

Interesting and thanks for posting Flynaked that picture of the G41 magazine re-number.
with the exception of the stamped numerals,
It looks very similar in the type of incomplete scrub and “re-numbering” as the magazine
on my rifle just engraved VS stamped.

here is what appears to be a worn out WaA 359 below the serial number toward the butt.
Not other stamps on the keel of the stock are visible except the serial number.
Nothing under the butt plate.

Took a look and it looks like I remembered wrong, something must have disrupted production or shipments as the low month was May 1944 and then jumped way up in the final month of deliveries in June. Additionally the HWA rejected ~500 G41’s in June. I wondered if this coincided with the bombing in Lübeck but the timing is off, so no clue as to the disruption.
