First time purchaser of K98K

I'm completely new here and am looking to make my first online gun purchase. I'm under the impression that I can acquire a decent condition K98K with Nazi insignia, ideally a Brno version, for roughly $200-250. Is this a reasonable impression? My next question... are people on here interested in selling them, or would you guys recommend I search online gun brokers instead?

Thank you very much.

I doubt very much you will find one that cheap. Even Russian captures are hitting double that. Not saying it's not possible, but those deals are few and far between

I've never seen one go that low. I just saw a Russian Capture Kar98k go for $400 on a local gunboard, which I thought was low. There are usually Kar98ks on here for sale, I can count 3 right now. Gunbroker isn't bad, but I'm starting to learn that this community may be a better place to do business and get quality items than bidding on gunbroker.

Yeah, basically I'm looking for a legit K98K for up to $250 or so, and have checked gunbroker and some other bidding sites.

It's going to be tough to find one that cheap. Even crappy gunshops know not to price them that low now. I've been trying to build the cheapest 98k from parts I can and it still runs nearly $400 for a totally mismatched gun with a good bore. The stock along is $200 minimum for a decent one, barreled actions go for minimum $100 if the bore is good. Then you need a bolt and other parts which run in the $100 range for "junk" parts.

At 250, you are in Arisaka country

Agreed. Or Mosin Nagant 91/30 rifles, but even those have been going up in price. But, you could get one of those for $150-$175 pretty easy for a nice one.

You'll have an impossible time trying to find a Kar98k for less than $400. Like mrfarb said, parts alone are $400 and up just for the major components. If you save up, you could probably get a nice looking Kar98k for $400-$550 that is a mismatch, with some reproduction parts (cleaning rod, sight hood). But, still a nice honest example..

aren't we all

OK, gentlemen. :) Would anyone care to suggest a reasonable alternative rifle, similar in style, another Mauser perhaps? I'm a new shooter, so I'm simply looking for reliability, decent quality, and love the historical aspect of WW2.

Here is my advice: PATIENCE. The more you rush, the more rookie mistakes you will make. Within the last couple years I've had good success on Craigslist. I picked up a barreled action with lots of small parts for $100, an unmolested bolt M/M dot44 for $275 and a completely matching original bcd 43 for $250. At the gun show I bought a bolt M/M byf44 with duffel cut stock, missing fore end and barrel bands from a visitor for $60 and on Calguns I found a mismatched beater bcd 43 for $300. Deals are still out there but don't expect them to jump on your lap.

+1--- what he said!-- I'd also suggest a Yugo M48. They are in the $250-300 range now, if you are patient and look. It's very similar to a 98k, but uses a shorter action.

I would call this luck but it would not be true. I have worked hard as I can in my area and come up with a couple of gems but they do not jump in your lap. You have to beat the bushes a lot. Now to get the guy to sell me his arisaka he has hanging on his wall is his shed.

Mauser

In my neck of the woods if I look hard enough I can still pickup a yugo mauser for around 250.00 .Rick

At 250, you are in Arisaka country

I actually saw an Arisaka (sans the Chrysanthemum) at a gunshow going for exactly $250 this weekend.

I didn't see any "original" or Russian capture Kar98ks but saw two Yugo refurbishments (scrubbed of Nazi markings) and some Yugo M48 Mauser copies in the $300s.

Without the Mum the Arisaka would not be very collectable. I wish you luck on your search but if you are looking for an unmolested piece I doubt you will find one at that price. Does the rifle have to be German or can it be from the WWII time period?

If you want something of Historical significance save another $250. and find a nice RC K98, otherwise the VZ24/ M48/ M24-47 (all can be found on Gun Broker) are all good shooters and generally in your price range.

Good luck.

HDH.
