Third Party Press

Editorial: "Blame it on the book"

I belong to an arms collector’s club, & we meet twice a month at an electrician’s union hall. our meetings are mini fun shows/yard sales, several guys are buying just for resale at other venues. one of the (former club prez) guys often has 3r items, but not of the quality we usually see here. I bought a page of cigarette cards from him, $25, but repros & not represented as such. I know they’re repros because any swaz’s in the photos are obscured. For the money no big deal, but……
last night he had a K98k rifle for $850, walnut semi-kreigs stock, scrubbed receiver, eagle N proof, no military proofs on barrel/receiver, front band late war, sling band (on backwards) with bottom swivel only (numbered/non matching). the stock was walnut, but between the wrist & sling hole, it was covered (10-15) in stamps, e/s, flaming bombs, what I think were US style lettered cartouches, marks not oriented in any particular way. It was such a mess that I asked him what the story was, & he rather patronizingly pointed out the obvious details, saying it might be a late war postal or railway rifle. “you could take it home tonight” . I believe it had a Suhl proof, & a number under it ‘248’ IIRC. (sorry no pix, left phone in truck)

I always look at any K98s there, but I kept thinking about the ‘other dealer’ in Bruce’s post, as this guy often says stuff that I know (even as a noob) isn’t right. last month I overheard him telling another not to shoot “fur mg” marked ammo because it would blow up his rifle…….

I've met far, far fewer dealers than collectors who are knowledgeable. Maybe there's one area they really know because they started collecting and the hobby snowballed into a business, but for the most part they're generalists at best who have a vested interest in buying low and selling high.

There are exceptions, of course, but in those cases you tend to be buying for the higher end of what anyone here would consider acceptable because they know what they have, know the market, and usually have a reputation for good dealing that gives a bit of a mark up to their stock.

And this is completely setting aside the moral peril that comes in once money and livelihoods get involved. We're going to assume they're perfectly honest and doing stuff out of ignorance rather than knowing full well that a rifle isn't correct but also knowing that if they can convince a lower information buyer that it is they'll make a better return.

Curious, is it against forum rules to put a name with this guy so other can be forewarned about dealing with him?

The only dude I can think of they are talking about is "buckeye190" on GB. He's notorious for selling fakes/humped rifle's. He lives in Ohio as well. Nice snag on that AX 1940 btw!

I would have liked to see that one but with the the unseasonably warm weather, the 2 wheeler was calling. Maybe he'll still have it on the 20th.

The guy is just dishonest about everything. Compulsive liar. The 98K Books described here in this thread are the best ones. Here's more.

Another example of a misrepresented item.
