Dresden Spandau 1916/17 9329

Here is a pretty sweet Dresden Sterngewehr that I picked up as a pretty heavy project rifle a while back on GB. You could tell by the photos that the receiver, bolt, stock and trigger guard all matched. You could also tell that the stock was pretty jacked up and had a really bad repair attempted at one point. It was missing several parts and the auction indicated that. I had to track down both bands, both trigger guard screws and locking screws, a hand guard, a follower and a safety. It wasn’t clear from the photos that the safety was missing, but it certainly was. I sent the stock to my wood guy and he pulled off an amazing job of resorting the all original piece of wood. The old repair wasn’t straight from the back band up and featured old glue and bad cracks…. My wood guy really is a magician IMHO! I better give a shout out to Frank (runner) here in the forum for helping me out with a few of these restoration original parts! I hope all of you enjoy how well it turned out as much as me…..

This a fantastic example of a tough gun, Jory! It has a great look to it, and is a nice smattering of different makers; the parts seem to be half Simson, half Spandau. You also have a very early Siemens and Halske Receiver. I find the stock interesting as I was under the impression Simson adopted both features at the same time, seems they were like the consortium and adopted the take down first.

Great save Jory! I'm glad you listened to reason this time! Haha

Welcome to the Dresden club. I was very happy to see you, Cyrus and Sam all join within the last year. Pretty funny how that works out.

These are probably my favorite sterngewehre due to all their strange quirks; cool star, Saxon cypher, date and cypher on the buttplate, etc.

Here's the serial study on these. We've added considerably, but still very much a low volume maker and not many out there.

Awesome job restoring this rifle Jory. Turned out great, and presents exceptionally well. Hard agree on that woodworking, I can't make out any kind of repair job.

A perfect display of a worthy rifle - far fewer mysteries would exist with similar performances!

Dresden (and Saxony in general - of the four states...) offer the most mysteries rifle wise of this era, -although Bavaria is my favorite state of the empire, Saxony was no slouch and has a fascinating history , - just not as special compared with Bavaria as a whole, - but Dresden exceptionalism accounts for 90% of Saxon magnificent (a damn shame the 1945 bombing, they should have had Mass Murderer "Bomber Harris" in the dock next to the rest of the war criminals at Nuremberg...)

*** though to be fair, FtG was the precursor to Dresden destruction but at least FtG had a military reason as a basis...
