Local guy has the attached, asking $1350 for it, says it’s all matching. I would like to get one nice matching example. Says it has not been sanded, not import marked. Looking at it the stock appears correct to me for a late war (cupped). Looking for other input and if that’s a “fair” price, blueing seems okay, but being late war not sure if the blueing was weaker as well.

Thank you - I’ll pass on this one then. For my own knowledge how can you tell the receiver is post war? What are the aways?

The bird on the barrel is a fake fat turkey and recvr. is post war.

Thank you for the quick reply. In comparing an authentic bird to this one I can see the difference. On the receiver what’s the five away, the font of the wording?

Pretty sure this is being sold on Gunbroker as well. Seller is mlgbzd. It's described as "All Matching Non Import Marked Beautiful RARE Late War Kriegsmodell Mauser K98K Rifle".

The top of he recvr. should have an Eagle WaA A80. The barrel shoulder should have a circle z proof, the serial number has the wrong font, numbers are huge on the bolt root and the bolt sleeve should be numbered, etc.
Go on the pic. reference index and then to dou 45 mega thread and you'll learn the many problems with it.
It's one of a kind allright!:faint:

swjXE nailed it, total fake built from a postwar Czech dou marked rifle. Damn shame people are bidding on it at all, the signs are clear it’s fake by just a simple comparison. Bolt is the easiest thing to pick out, and the lack of top acceptance. Plus the fake looking barrel proof.

I thought this came up recently as a question also? Maybe a turd alert? I wonder if this is one of the rifles being sold by bigger online retailers also originally advertised as latewar German? The bottom metal would be easily swapped.

Czech postwar fakery.jpg

In the area on the left you can see where metal has been moved. The surface there just isn't uniform as are the areas all around it. On the right you can see the diagonal file marks they weren't able to completely clean up. Just based on 'where' those manipulated areas are you can figure out what was removed.

Any of you guys that are new at this and don't have the Karem/Steves 98k volumes, you are flying blind! Especially if you're going to be buying other than "garden variety" 98's, such as SS contract, depot builds or reworks, or actually any 98k's. They aren't cheap books but they are very well made, have tons of great photos and information, the photography is awesome, they will save you many times the money they cost, and you may actually enjoy them more than your rifles and no, they are not paying me to say this. My God! they even cover bayonets, rods, slings, cartridge pouches and on and on. It blows my mind just thinking about it!

Pretty sure I saw it on Dave’s site. I laughed when I first saw the barrel proof

I'll second that. When something comes up in my area I go to the books. Hell, I go to the books when I just need to drool over a piece.

Yea, I find myself often lugging around all 4 volumes they get real heavy reeeeeeaaaaaal quick, I should get an old person grocery cart. People are flabbergasted when they see them and the contents, they always comment on how well and detailed the books are... I'm like yup k98forum. The books are well worth the investment x10-if your going to drop $3500 on a rifle you can spend $350 for the volumes.

I don't see how Bruce and Mike could have written a better reference for k98 rifles.. seriously.

I'm beginning to get this more and more. I feel like a noob posting a rifle here asking experts, when everything I need and more is in the books.

If my primary interest is mid to late war, does it make any sense to get Volume I, or is Volume II enough to help guide me?

For starters you'll need lla and llb. Volume 1 and 3 are already sold out and apparently won't be reprinted.
You're not a noob but you will be if you don't get them. :biggrin1:

If you like wartime, Volume 2 a&b covers the wartime years. It’s the most bang for the buck and my personal favorite of all we’ve done in content and info.

Anyway the point is about to be moot, we have like 5-6 Volume 1 books left in sets on the website to sell, no more after that. The books are expensive, but if you think they are expensive now wait until they are all sold out. We sold out of Kriegsmodell a few years back - it sold for $95 new, they trade for $250’ish now?

Considering my past experience with dou45s, it's hard to look at any posted, but that's a stinker. Hope no one here gets dinked!
